Why worry? I made this little something for you this beautiful Friday morning. ??Inspired by the “Why Worry” mindmap talk by Gaur Gopal on YouTube few years ago, I’m hoping to inspire business, IT and/or cybersecurity leaders to do something about their organization’s cybersecurity program OR console them if they feel bad about being powerless after doing so much already. ??This field is unforgiving. If an organization suffers a cyber attack under your watch, you could hear “seriously? Despite all the noise and investments?” On the other hand, if no adverse cyber event occurs for years, either as a result of sheer hard work or a stroke of luck, you could hear “God knows what that team does. Why would anyone want to attack us anyway?”. I’ve heard the latter so many times in this job. Once, a business unit leader told me “We’ve done it like that here for at least 25 years and we’ve never been hacked.” ??If you’re worried about being liked in this field, you should try selling ice cream. And when you do, be sure to have different flavors available; and be prepared to give it for free. ??As a leader, if the prospect of a serious cyber attack keeps you up at night and you can do something about it, try understanding the problem first then find a solution that works. Speak to the experts if need be. If you don’t have the resources and/or support to do something about it, you should be able to write. Assess, qualify/quantify the risk, document it and articulate it. Then, let those who earn more money than you take it from there. At that point, your answer to the “can you do something about it” question will be “No”. ????If you’re an individual contributor, your life should even be much easier. ?? Hunting for a Security Architect ?? This is the toughest individual contributor talent search in cybersecurity. Nothing else comes close! ?? Years before COVID hit (circa 2016), I tried hiring a couple of domain security architects to work on-site. Even with the promise of hefty relocation package and all that, it took me over a year before I could finally get one. The other position never got filled. ?? Even years after the pandemic and the lessons it brought, many organizations are still trying to force the issue. You're searching for a rare talent, yet insisting that they work out of location. What's more, you're offering less comp (comparatively speaking). ???? Well, good luck with that. ?? I'll post more extensively about who a security architect is and who s/he's not in the future but for now I'll say any cybersecurity program with no true security architect or key elements of security architecture is going to fail. ?????? Failure is relative and can be subjective but remember this: trying to solve a problem without fully understanding it is like setting sail in unknown waters without a map: you may end up lost, far from your intended destination. cc:Digiss
