Today the Pacific Institute and DigDeep have released a new report, “Achieving Equitable, Climate-Resilient Water and Sanitation for Frontline Communities,” highlighting over 100 actionable strategies for climate-resilient water and sanitation in frontline communities across the US. Climate change is accelerating climate disasters and extreme weather events, including heat waves, droughts, floods, wildfires, and hurricanes, that disrupt and sometimes destroy water and sanitation access, especially for the most overburdened and underresourced communities. The report includes real-world examples of how frontline communities strengthen the climate resilience of water and wastewater systems. The report is the third in the ongoing series “Water, Sanitation, and Climate Change in the United States,” a partnership between Pacific Institute,?DigDeep, and The Center For Water Security and Cooperation. In honor of #EarthDay, let's reflect on the importance of access to clean water for everyone across the United States. ?? From the Navajo Nation to Appalachia and the Texas?colonias, the water access gap remains a critical issue that affects our neighbors in all 50 states. ??? On the Navajo Nation, families travel long distances to haul water, and households pay at least 72x more for the water they haul vs. piped water. ?? In Appalachia, aging infrastructure and water contamination have left communities struggling to access clean, reliable water. In West Virginia,?approximately 2/3 of water systems?have the worst quality in the United States. ?? In the Texas?colonias, more than 500,000 people have to carefully ration their water without access to working taps. Families rely on water kiosks and costly water deliveries for their basic needs. This Earth Day, we invite you to join us in advocating for water access and supporting initiatives that bring clean, safe water to communities in need. Together, we can work towards a future where everyone, regardless of where they live, has access to this essential resource. Happy Earth Day!???
