It was an amazing experience! ?? Presentation Highlights: I loved sharing insights on Digital IF (DIFI Consortium) and Waveform Virtualization (WAVE Consortium) and how they’re shaping the future of SATCOM technologies. It was great to see so much interest and enthusiasm around these topics! ?? Inspiring Connections: Connecting with both students ?? and researchers ?? at CTTC was a true highlight. Engaging in discussions and exchanging ideas with such bright minds gave me a fresh perspective and left me inspired. DIFI member, HawkEye 360, the world’s leading provider of space-based radio frequency (RF) data and analytics, recently announced that its Cluster 9 satellites have achieved Full Operational Capability (FOC), significantly boosting the company’s data collection and global monitoring capabilities. Additionally, Cluster 10 has reached Initial Operational Capability (IOC) and is expected to be fully operational this month. ?? Cracking the Code on DIFI Throughput: A Guide to Digital IF Performance! 1?? Throughput Rule of Thumb ?? The equation for Digital IF Throughput = Bandwidth x 2 x Bit Depth x Overhead (110% for messaging) offers a handy estimate: For 8-bit depth at 500 MHz, you’ll need roughly 10 Gbps of throughput. This simplified "500 MHz x 20 = 10 Gbps" calculation gives a realistic starting point for most setups! 2?? Right Bits for the Right Task ?? Most communications applications can achieve optimal performance with 8 bits or less. But when precision is key (e.g., radar or high-resolution imaging), stepping up to 16 bits ensures more detailed measurement. This choice affects data rates significantly. 3?? 12-Bit ADCs are Common ?? Many applications today use 12-bit ADCs, like those in AMD's RFSoC. This bit depth strikes a balance between throughput and data precision, making it a popular choice in mixed-signal designs where both performance and efficiency matter.
