To create place is to collaborate, dialog, research, draw, model, and discover through making.

关于我们

At Didier Design Studio, we practice landscape architecture as a transformative process. Our design philosophy is rooted in the exchange between place and making: revealing or enhancing the essence of place through the act of making. From drawing to modeling and testing, we collaborate with institutions, individuals, and communities to shape ideas and craft spaces that are inspired by and mindful of local resources, scales, textures and materials. We ground our work in analysis and science, but also open our creative process to intuition and serendipity, weaving layers of beauty and meaning into the landscape. Our designs express a unique sense of place, often revealing relationships between ecological systems and cultural patterns of a given site.

  • Meet Susan Hughes, Didier Design Studio's Senior Associate and Director of Operations and Sustainability. Didier Design Studio | Landscape Architecture merges sustainability and beauty as a single, integrated design ethos. Celebrating and prioritizing our commitment to sustainable practices and projects as a mission-based studio, Susan took on the role of Sustainability Director this year. In this role, Susan leads our team in performing project sustainability reviews. These include conducting critical research into carbon zero efforts, water resource management practices, lifecycle material impacts, heat island/shading considerations, and carbon footprint analyses. Susan's broad background in design – including 15 years experience in Landscape Architecture, Architecture, and Planning – has involved managing a wide range of complex public, institutional, and residential projects. This background means that Susan brings significant, aggregate experience to her role as Director of Operations, keeping projects focused and on-budget. Susan enjoys the immediate, hands-on nature of work in the field and with clients, and the opportunities for collaborative solutions that this work affords. Her love of nature and her hands-on custom construction experience informs her strong sense of texture, scale, materiality, color, and detailing. Originally from Massachusetts, Susan grew up in the rolling hills of the Connecticut River Valley. Her interest in landscape architecture grew from her combined passions of art, building, materials, and the human experience in built and natural environments. One project benefiting from Susan's keen eye to detail is the newest garden feature at the Denver Botanic Gardens: the Habitat Gardens, shown here growing into its own during its first year around the sun. • Congratulations to ABQ BioPark Botanic Garden on its recent groundbreaking for the highly anticipated Lebanon and Beyond Garden. With design by Didier Design Studio in collaboration with BioPark staff and Sam Sterling Architecture | SSA, the new garden within the greater Botanic Garden will transport visitors to experience the culture, textures, and sense of place of Lebanon and the Eastern Mediterranean. The garden will showcase many of the landscape typologies, architectural features, plant species, and regional practices found throughout the Mediterranean region, with a focus on the Lebanese Garden in particular. The organization of the garden references the diverse ecotones and distinct plant collections within Lebanon and the Eastern Mediterranean basin, from the coast to mountain and valley. Throughout, features and plant collections will highlight the ties and commonalities between Albuquerque and Lebanon. As BioPark’s Curator of Plants, Maria Thomas, said, the Lebanon and Beyond Garden "will serve as an educational and cultural bridge for future generations."

  • Didier Design Studio is an award-winning landscape architecture practice seeking a mid- to senior-level designer who will be a strong contributor to our creative, collaborative process. SUSTAINING BEAUTY: We merge sustainability and beauty as a single, integrated design ethos. By incorporating local materials and native plants in thoughtful ways, our design practice based in the American West participates in ideating new notions of beauty for landscapes in our region. Our recent projects with the University of Denver draw from their broader context to engrain an authentic sense of place and urban habitat on campus. Here at the Sie Complex, Ericameria nauseosa (rabbitbrush) and Fallugia paradoxa (canyon plume) claim an upper south-facing slope, highlighting the site's diverse topography and the movement of water leading to a rain garden planted with a diverse matrix of native grasses. This designed ecology presents a playful contrast to the mowed lawn, inviting reflection on the role of topography and water informing the distribution of plants in an arid climate. HOW WE WORK: We don't design things; we reveal relationships between things. Working with topography and soil as our medium, we craft habitats or sets of relationships between climate, plants, water, ground, people, and other connected forms of life. We do not approach these transformations lightly. With each new garden or landscape, we carefully research, study, draw, model, and test each idea iteratively. This terrain model and soil map for the Pollinators' and Bird Garden at Penn State allowed us to study and communicate a sculpted groundplane to direct water and create a series of microclimates within the garden. Distinct soil conditions further amplify these transitions through the garden, from well-draining gravel, to sandy loam, to high-fertility garden plots for crop production. SITE MATTERS: We believe in creating artful interventions to reveal each site’s unique qualities and characteristics. We listen to the land. Our recent project with the Greater Des Moines Botanical Garden is a reflection on the broader contextual landscapes of Iowa, tracing the formation and distribution of those landscapes inscribed through geologic history. The Founders Garden emulates the sand prairies of the Loess Hill deposited by wind with gentle, sweeping landforms hosting a unique plant collection curated by horticulturist Ryan Drake. "Threshold", a sculpture commissioned by Juan Jose Novella, animates the heart of the garden. Do you share a passion for revealing stories about site and ecology through design?
