The term Party Chief emerged as surveying became more structured and organized in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Surveying teams were traditionally referred to as “parties,” similar to exploration or military groups, and the group leader naturally became known as the Party Chief. The Party Chief is essentially the leader of the survey crew, responsible for the operation, data collection, and team management at the survey site. The Party Chief ensures the robotic total stations and other equipment are properly set up and operated. #landsurveyor #sureyorsweek #history

In the world of construction and land development, accuracy is everything. The skilled professionals behind the towering structures and precisely aligned roadways ensure that every measurement and elevation is calculated with pinpoint precision. Among these key players are the leveler and the chainman—two roles rooted in centuries of surveying tradition yet still essential in today’s projects. The Leveler was specifically tasked with operating the dummy level. The leveler was responsible for ensuring that the instrument was properly set up and accurately reading the elevations of the land. This position required a keen eye for detail and precision. The chainman's role was to assist the surveyor by holding one end of the chain, with another chainman holding the other end, as they measured straight lines across the land. This role was crucial for maintaining accuracy in measurement. Understanding and appreciating the work of the leveler and chainman offers insight into the complexity and craftsmanship that go into every successful construction project. Their work, often unseen, ensures that the structures we rely on daily are built on a foundation of accuracy and expertise. #landsurveyor #surveyorsweek #history #leveler #chainman

The terms Rodman, Level Rodman, and Chainman have their roots in the centuries-old history of land surveying. Rodman or Level Roman refers to a person who worked closely with the leveler, holding the leveling rod at various points across the survey area. The rodman had to ensure that the rod was held vertically and steadily to obtain precise elevation measurements. The term dates back to at least the 18th century, when systematic land surveying became more formalized, especially in the context of colonial land division and early infrastructure projects. The use of chains in surveying dates back to the 1600s, when Gunter’s chain was introduced. The chainman assisted the surveyor by holding one end of the chain, with another chainman holding the other end, as they measured straight lines across the land. This role was crucial for maintaining measurement accuracy. Chains were commonly used in early American land surveys and remained standard equipment until they were replaced by more modern tape measures and electronic distance measurement tools in the 20th century. #landsurveyor #sureyorsweek #history

Introducing the Deputy Surveyor. Deputy Surveyors were especially important during the westward expansion of the United States. They helped map new territories and establish property boundaries, often working in rugged and undeveloped landscapes. These were surveyors appointed by the Surveyor General to carry out actual surveying duties in the field. Deputy surveyors were often responsible for large areas and might employ assistants to help with the physical aspects of surveying. #Landsurveyor #surveyorsweek #history

It’s National Surveyors Week! To celebrate this important week, we will be sharing a series of survey-related images that will showcase the evolution throughout history of the land surveyor. The first up being from the colonial time frame: The Surveyor General — This was a high-ranking official appointed to oversee all surveying activities within a specific territory or colony. The Surveyor General was responsible for ensuring the accuracy of surveys, managing survey records, and sometimes resolving disputes over land boundaries. #landsurveyor #surveyorsweek #history

Happy International Pi Day! ?? Today, we celebrate the magic of π (3.14159…), the constant that makes the math behind circles, curves, and angles possible! Whether you’re calculating boundaries, mapping terrain, or measuring distances, π is at the heart of it all. #PiDay #LandSurveying

We are wrapping up our EV site today, running the R12i and SX12. We started the site yesterday by completing the boundary and picking up line locations left behind by another contractor handling the line locating for this site. Today, we focus on refining the details—picking up islands with the GPS while we use the SX12 to conduct hard shoots and scan the building to ensure complete and accurate data collection. We’re working efficiently to stay ahead of the afternoon rain expected in the Vegas Valley. #landsurveying #landsurveyor #work #mapping

We are starting the day at our Decatur Post site, which is slated to become the future home of several retail chain stores. Being on-site, today’s focus includes staking out light poles and staking rough-grade curb points to showcase areas that have been redesigned. #landsurveying #construction #building #work #landsurveyor
