The Science and Technology Directorate (S&T) serves as the research and development arm of the Department of Homeland Security. We help improve security across the nation by developing innovative technology, knowledge products, methods, and solutions to address the critical needs of the Homeland Security Enterprise. A large part of our mission is finding solutions to better enable and protect the men and women charged with securing our communities and critical infrastructure, including first responders, Border Patrol agents, Transportation Security Officers, cybersecurity professionals, and more. Our responsibilities are wide-ranging, focusing on all aspects of the nation’s security to include first responders, cybersecurity, critical infrastructure, community resilience, ports of entry, and chemical/biological threats. We achieve our mission by partnering with the private sector, academia, and other government organizations to develop new technology capabilities and transition them to market. Combating the fentanyl crisis is a DHS-wide effort. As the lead for R&D, S&T is developing new technologies and tools that can help law enforcement interdict and seize chemicals and machines being used in the manufacturing process, as well as target the criminal organizations and individuals who help facilitate this illicit trade. Calling all startups and innovators! S&T’s Silicon Valley Innovation Program (SVIP) released the Software Artifact Dependency Graph Generation at Scale topic call in partnership with the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. This solicitation seeks foundational open-source capabilities for compiled languages, interpreted languages and packaging systems, as well as value-added services that utilize the foundational capabilities to accelerate progress in software composition analysis and vulnerability management. This technology, developed with MaXentric Technologies LLC, is designed to give law enforcement the ability to detect life through walls, providing a critical edge in safety and situational awareness. The open fields of Mississippi provided the testing ground for the Bellbird Aerial communications Platform, an Unmanned Aerial System, or drone, designed under contract with S&T’s First Responder Capability Program. The Bellbird is equipped with a powerful speaker and boom microphone in order to provide clear, audible, communications between law enforcement personnel and large crowds.
