Can AI help diagnose and treat a medical condition? That’s the subject of a lot of debate in healthcare. And our closing panel at the 2025 NCHID Digital Health Summit didn’t shy away from it. For straightforward medical conditions, AI can not only work well, studies show it can outperform a physician. There’s enough data for AI tools to draw reliable conclusions. For complex conditions, AI can supplement the work of physicians. It’s a tool to aggregate and analyze data that can give clinicians more insights than they’ve ever had. In other words, AI has a great deal of potential for improving care. It might mean a radical change in how care is delivered. But AI also needs human oversight. That's especially true in healthcare, where people's lives are at stake. Bottom line: Everyone with a say in healthcare needs to work together to advance proper use of AI. Learn from each other, listen, and take our differences into account. We love it when healthcare discussions turn to helping patients! Collaboration among people who work in healthcare is one thing. Collaboration aimed at improving care and reducing complexity for patients is even better. We’ve been talking a lot about collaboration today at the 2025 NCHID Digital Health Summit. A panel discussion led by Trudy Buckingham of Gilead Sciences brought out great ideas for helping deliver better, more collaborative care: ? Develop good processes for working with community organizations that help patients ? Give patients new user-friendly apps and tools that are designed to improve medication adherence and keeping doctor’s appointments ? Don’t let “healthcare just moves slowly” be an excuse for failing to let patients in on innovations as they emerge ? Collaboration is always critical in healthcare. When artificial intelligence is involved, even more so. Healthcare organizations can and should adopt any technologies that improve collaboration. But AI tools can’t replace personal communication and judgment. Discussions on skills, especially AI, needed for the 21st Century workforce are taking place in practically all healthcare organizations. It’s a big topic at the 2025 NCHID Digital Health Summit. Kim Baich, chief impact officer of the PAN Foundation, is taking a methodical approach to implementing AI. The PAN Foundation advocates for patients, and that means trust is paramount. “Let me be very clear: We are using AI to assist and augment, in no way to replace. The skills that are critically important to our mission and our core are people skills.” Here’s how Alicia Bowers at Advocate Health puts it when talking about the big questions around AI adoption: “What are the risks and how am I going to defend against them? What AI applications will have the greatest impact on healthcare? To dig into that big question, we’ve got two experts sharing their insights at the 2025 NCHID Digital Health Summit in Charlotte. Matt Sullivan, chief medical information officer at Advocate Health, thinks health systems and clinicians are off to a good start with ambient listening. But it’s going to take a lot of time to go beyond these basic AI tools. After all, healthcare is slow out of necessity, given the needs around patient privacy and regulatory requirements. And SMIT PATEL????, director of the Digital Medicine Society (DiMe), says there’s a key next step: Getting clinicians up to speed on the use of AI. That’s not to say all clinicians should become IT experts. Instead, Patel says they need some basic upskilling focused on tools to help reduce the cognitive burden that comes with new technology.
