“This movement of churches developing their land is like a no-brainer. They support the mission of the church and serve ‘the least of us,’ says Yolanda Winstead, CEO of DHIC, Raleigh’s largest nonprofit housing developer. But the concept’s novelty and congregations’ inexperience mean “we are building the plane while we are flying it,” she adds. #sacred #civic #discernment Mark W. Commissioner West's impact and leadership can be seen and felt all across Southeast Raleigh & Wake County -- a fitting tribute. Proud to call you all neighbors Southeast Raleigh Promise State Employees’credit Union YMCA of the Triangle Wake County Public School System Self-Help Credit Union Purpose Built Communities
Disclaimer: This is my longest post ever - but I promise it's worth the read! I awoke today feeling a bit anxious. It's year-end - you know that time of year when the holidays aren't quite here and the work to be done is daunting. Thanksgiving is knocking on your front door; Christmas is just around the corner and 2025 can be seen on the horizon. This week is the start of wrapping things up for the year - and not just presents. As 2024 wraps up, I reflect on a year of change. After 15 years at United Way, I was laid off, but new doors opened. By July, I joined Southeast Raleigh Promise, where I’ve embraced a vibrant, historic community with deep roots and big dreams. Southeast Raleigh Promise is the first Purpose Built Communities initiative in our fine city. It was created first with a vision and then a whole lot of dreaming! The YMCA of the Triangle purchased 32 acres on Rock Quarry Road and the I40. The Y planned to put a new facility in Southeast Raleigh. With lots of community input, many visionaries and the SECU Beacon Site was created. 10+ years in the making - along with the SE Raleigh Y, Wake County Public School System, a joint facility was built, and SE Raleigh Elementary School was born, (where all kids learn to swim!) - many of you know that speaks to my heart. But I'm not finished - we are still dreaming because DHIC then developed 120 affordable rental homes that currently house 220+ residents - 50% of whom are under the age of 18. So the elementary children can walk/ride their bikes to school safely. You must be saying - I had no idea, and those of you who do know, can attest to how lovely SECU Beacon Site is. However, the dream is not over. Today I sit in my new office at Beacon Point! Yes, that's right, Southeast Raleigh Promise has a forever home at the Beacon Site on the final parcel of land. Self Help Credit developed a free-standing branch office and a 44,000 sq ft commercial building, of which we are a tenant. Our administrative offices look out over the soccer field and playground - talk about getting a daily dose of inspiration. To watch the children play so freely, well we all know how that feels. We opened a nonprofit suite that will offer below-market subleasing opportunities to nonprofit organizations serving the southeast Raleigh community. So many of you know who James West was - a resident of SE Raleigh, he served in various leadership roles for 24 years. He was a Raleigh City Councilmember and then a Wake County Commissioner, a position he held at the of his passing. In honor of Dr. West’s life and legacy, we have named the nonprofit suite the Dr. James P. West Suite for Nonprofit Excellence. We are also using this opportunity to invite his friends and colleagues to join us in honoring Dr. West by contributing to Southeast Raleigh Promise in support of our mission to further the work and causes that Dr. West cared so deeply about. https://lnkd.in/eaG47eUd

Great to be among so many of the partners who have helped us make the miracle of #affordablehousing & #homeownership a reality for thousands of North Carolina families over the past 50 years. Know a #Triangle CEO or C-Suite leader that wants to make an impact with community? Read more to learn more about Habitat's CEO Build.????????
Yesterday morning, we gathered with industry leaders to kick off our annual CEO Build with a breakfast and panel to learn more about Habitat for Humanity's mission of building safe, affordable housing in the Triangle. ??? Each year, changemakers from across the Triangle come together to fundraise, network, and highlight the issue of affordable housing alongside Habitat Wake, Habitat for Humanity of Durham, and Habitat for Humanity of Orange County, NC at the annual CEO Build. At this year's kickoff event, we had the pleasure of hosting panelists Yolanda Winstead of DHIC, Kari Stoltz of Bank of America, Tom Clancy of Clancy & Theys Construction Company, and Adam Klein of Duke University for a discussion about the business case for affordable housing, moderated by Dane Huffman of Triangle Business Journal. We also heard from Habitat Wake homeowner Mary, who closed on her house earlier this fall. We're thankful to our panelists and everyone who took time out of their schedules to join us. Thanks especially to Kari Stoltz and Bank of America for your longtime sponsorship of this build event. We can't wait to see you all on the build site in May. The CEO Build will be here before you know it! There is still time to join — if you or your C-Suite leadership is interested, please visit https://www.ceobuild.org/ to learn more.?

You're welcome Heather Hennessey Whelehan - our partnerships with North Carolina's cities, counties, towns and municipalities like Town of Cary make our work possible.
“#Homelessness can feel like a big macro-economic trend that is out of our control, but I don’t buy into this ‘It’s just a fact of modern life’ mindset. Our region is in a growth stage, and we still have the opportunity to shape our communities.” -Heather Hennessey Whelehan "The Town of Cary has long partnered with The Carying Place, Inc. to increase the nonprofit’s impact. This year, the town has given TCP a grant to buy two additional properties. A larger partnership is also underway: Cary is working with Greenwood Baptist Church, TCP and DHIC —a nonprofit that builds #affordablehousing — to redevelop the church site at 110 SE Maynard Road, adding affordable housing, daycare facilities and community programming areas for TCP’s Journey Home program." ?? by Caitlin Wheeler for 5 West Magazine #YIGBY #ncrealestate #raleighhousing #housingfirst #housingnc #faithandleadership

For DHIC, Community Impact Measurement (CIM) is part of a broader strategy to ensure that improvements benefit existing residents and create a sense of pride and community. As Rachel Tutwiler, MSW explained, “The goal is not to gentrify neighborhoods but to improve the quality of life for those already living there. This is a long-term commitment, with the hope that revitalization efforts will have ripple effects throughout the area.” Learn more below. #communityimpact #impactmeasurement #residentservices #communitybuilding #communitydevelopment #southeastraleigh
