ROOTS. CONNECTIONS. CONTRIBUTIONS. Djimon Hounsou Foundation Joins CSAD’s Global Read-a-Thon On February 26th, The Center for Studies on Africa and Its Diaspora (CSAD) Global Read-a-Thon brought together authors, performers, and special guests—including Djimon Hounsou—to share powerful stories under this year’s theme: Roots: The Journey of Us. This theme honored the migrations, movements, and enduring connections across Africa and the African diaspora. "This event not only highlights the migration and movement of people of African descent but also celebrates the rich cultural and historical contributions they have made globally," said Edvige Jean-Fran?ois, DHumLitt, Executive Eirector of CSAD. CSAD, housed in the College of Arts & Sciences at Georgia State University, continues to be a vital space for research, dialogue, and storytelling that deepens our collective understanding of African and diasporic histories. We are back again on the south side of Chicago. Blacknuss.tv Afterfilm discussion with filmmaker Floyd Webb and Musician David Boykin From the Congo to Harlem and back again, Johan Grimonprez’s kinetic, urgent documentary delivers the politics of decolonization in jazz form, replete with virtuosic archival riffs, historical text in the form of Blue Note album covers, and musical performances by jazz legends (Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Nina Simone) who in the ‘60s doubled as cultural ambassadors to Africa. Filmmaker Johan Grimonprez examines the political machinations behind the 1961 assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba.

MUSIC. POWER. UNTOLD HISTORY. Oscar-nomiated soundtrack to a "Coup d’état" unearths the role of jazz in Cold War-era politics and African independence movements. This documentary by Johan Grimonprez shares how music became a tool of influence, resistance, and identity across the African continent. We are committed to building bridges between the African diaspora and the continent by sharing powerful, untold stories like this. Watch the documentary and read more in this NPR article.
