Decarbonizing Europe’s district heating & cooling networks: a necessary transition Half of Europe’s #energy consumption is used for heating and cooling, and 75% of it still relies on fossil fuels. The #modernization of district heating and cooling (DHC) systems is critical to reducing carbon emissions, enhancing energy efficiency, and integrating renewable energy sources. ?? DHC SwEEtch is leading the way! As you already know, the project focuses on mapping heat demand and renewable sources, modeLling efficient networks, assessing existing systems, and planning investments to accelerate the transition. ?? DHC-SwEEtch: Integrated tool chain for decarbonization roadmaps and investment plans towards efficient DHC systems.
关于我们
DHC SwEEtch is a pioneering project dedicated to transforming urban district heating and cooling (DHC) systems across Europe. By providing essential technical support, the project enables DHC operators to design effective decarbonization roadmaps through 2050 and develop actionable investment plans for the coming decade. Our Focus Areas: Mapping: Identifying demand and local renewable or waste heat resources to align with urban needs. Modeling: Leveraging advanced simulations to design efficient, sustainable systems. Assessment: Evaluating current infrastructures to pinpoint opportunities for enhancement. Investment planning: Creating detailed strategies for securing financing and supporting modernization efforts. With initial case studies in Italy, Poland, and Croatia, DHC SwEEtch is helping DHC networks integrate renewable energy and waste heat sources such as biomass, solar thermal, geothermal, and storage solutions. By 2025, five more networks will be selected through an open call, enabling a total of ten DHC networks to benefit from the project’s guidance. DHC SwEEtch is also dedicated to community-building through outreach, training, and collaboration initiatives, empowering stakeholders with the skills and connections to foster sustainable energy solutions.

?? Happy New Year 2025 from the DHC SwEEtch Team! DHC SwEEtch is an European initiative aimed at supporting district heating and cooling network operators in their transition towards #decarbonization. By providing technical expertise and developing tailored #roadmaps, the project empowers cities to build sustainable and efficient urban energy systems. This year marks an exciting milestone in the transformation of urban heating and cooling networks across Europe! What’s happening in 2025? ?? Five case studies are already underway, benefiting from the project’s support to modernize their infrastructures and prepare for the future: - Two networks in Italy, integrating waste heat recovery from wastewater treatment plants. - One network in Poland, combining waste heat recovery from wastewater, renewable sources (biomass, solar thermal, thermal storage), and exploring cogeneration. - Two networks in Croatia, integrating waste heat recovery from wastewater, geothermal energy, biomass, solar thermal, and cogeneration. In addition to these, an open call in 2025 will select five new networks, bringing the total to ten networks supported by DHC SwEEtch. These networks are developing 10-year investment plans aligned with a 2050 decarbonization roadmap, helping cities transition to greener and more sustainable #energy systems. ?? ?? A look back at DHC SwEEtch’s project launch, a key step to #sustainable District heating and cooling networks in Europe! ?? We’re excited to look back at our recent launch meeting for DHC SwEEtch project, where partners joined forces to advance sustainable district heating and cooling (DHC) across Europe. ? With a shared commitment to clean #energy, this project will support DHC networks in developing #decarbonization roadmaps for 2050 and actionable investment plans for the next decade. In this initial session, we outlined DHC SwEEtch’s four key focus areas, better known as the “4 links” of the project: ? Mapping heat demand and renewable or waste heat sources in target cities. ? Modelling #efficient and #sustainable DHC systems through advanced simulations. ? Assessment of current infrastructures to identify areas for improvement. ? Investment planning to craft concrete strategies for network modernization. ?? We’re starting with 5 case studies in Italy, Poland, and Croatia, where DHC SwEEtch will support network operators in integrating renewable energies like biomass, solar thermal, and geothermal, as well as waste heat recovery and storage. By the end of 2025, 5 additional networks will join through an open call, ultimately supporting ten networks in their #sustainability ambitions. ?? A big thanks to our partners for an inspiring start to this project! Together, we’re setting the path to sustainable urban heating and cooling across Europe. #CleanEnergy_EU LIFE Programme #LIFEAmplifier #LIFEAmplifiers Davide Bacchetti Gianni Martinazzoli Matteo Daminato Franjo Mrva Marco Cozzini Andrea Menapace Hrvoje Doroti?
