Chris “Daze” Ellis is a prolific artist and muralist. In the 1970s and 80s he helped spark a worldwide street art movement, and now his paintings have been collected by major art museums such as MoMA. ?? This Black History Month we're highlighting his radical contributions. ? Designer & Animator on our team, Dalmarcus Constance, says: "I like Chris “Daze” Ellis because he keeps that true graffiti energy alive while pushing it into new spaces. Graffiti has this raw, unfiltered creativity—bold colors, fast movement, and a mix of styles all colliding on a wall—and Daze captures all of that. He started on subway trains in the ’70s, but even in galleries, his work still feels alive, like the city itself is speaking." ???? Tré Seals is a designer, typographer, & founder of Vocal Type, a type foundry focused on representation and storytelling through typography. His fonts draw inspiration from historical movements and underrepresented voices.??? This Black History Month we're highlighting his singular contributions. ? Our Animation/Graphics Department Lead, Sydney Otieno, says: "Through typography, Tré Seals shows that design can be pushed beyond its aesthetic value and can also be a tool for activism and cultural preservation. As a Black designer, I feel empowered by Seals’ mission to diversify the design industry through the work of Vocal Type - I’m hopeful that we will continue to take steps forward by encouraging future generations of designers (especially from marginalized communities) to believe that their work and stories matter." ???? Scroll through for more on his vision and creations: Slide (3) - VTC Spike – Inspired by the typography in Spike Lee’s film posters. Slide (4) - VTC Marsha – A tribute to Marsha P. Johnson, reflecting the vertical sign that once hung outside of Stonewall. Slide (5) - VTC Harriet – A dingbat font based on the quilt codes of the Underground Railroad of the 17th-19th century, aptly named after Harriet Tubman. This font turns characters (A-Z and 1-9) into single quilt blocks with regular and inverted designs, allowing for seamless pattern creation.
