Every building tells a story of humanity–either dignity or exploitation. Attend the 2025 Design for Freedom Summit panel, “Generational Forest Stewardship in Haida Gwaii” to learn how the wood in the River building's new fascia upholds human dignity, a reverence for nature, and is a model of sustainable and generational forestry. The story of the Forest Stewardship Council?-certified wood and its journey to Grace Farms will be told by Leticia Hill (CEO, HaiCo | Haida Enterprise Corporation); Jeff Mosher (Chief Forester, Taan Forest); Orrin Quinn (Manager, Western Canada, Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Canada); @Toshihiro Oki (Architecture Advisor, Grace Farms), and Sharon Prince (CEO and Founder, Grace Farms Foundation. It begins in Haida Gwaii, a set of remote islands off the coast of British Columbia and home to the Taan Forest, the source of the fascia’s Western red cedar. The Haida Nation has lived on the land for thousands of years, and the Taan Forest of Haida Enterprise Corporation (HaiCo) is fully owned by The Haida Nation. The red cedar tree is revered and honored by the Haida, having used it to build their homes and more, for centuries. As stewards of the Taan Forest, The Haida Nation is modeling an innovative and sustainable model of forestry. The resources that are taken are exactly what are needed–no more–and biodiversity is nurtured. Hear insights on generational sustainability and how it nurtures respect for the people behind our materials, the environment, and why it is not only possible, but necessary to build ethically and humanely.
