The storm’s distant thunder, low-frequency impulses often dipping near 40 to 60 Hz, rolls like a deep, resonant drum and travels through the cooler air at this high elevation, 2,700 meters above sea level, where the speed of sound hovers around 335 meters per second, slightly lower than at coastal altitudes due to cooler ambient temperatures and reduced atmospheric pressure. These pressure-based waves diffract scatter across the Andean valley like ripples in a natural amphitheater. Coud formations can refract and partially absorb the higher harmonics, allowing the subterranean rumble of the lower frequencies to propagate farther. The city of Huamanga, Peru, catches this rolling thunder as a softly vibrating pulse. Reflective surfaces like rock faces and cliff walls set up a complex pattern of echoes, each reflection shifting phase and resulting in textured reverberations. The strong winds, gusting at upwards of 15 to 20 meters per second, bends the path of the sound waves downward, dispersing some of the mid-range frequencies along the slopes. Together, these elements form a natural sound design: a convergence of atmospheric acoustics, topography, and meteorology that transforms a distant electrical discharge into a subtle yet multi-layered soundscape, a pleasant yet powerful indicator of the coming rain. #peru #audio #soundscapes #sounddesign #thunderrecording #naturesounds
