Hospice does not always mean the very end. To qualify for hospice, you need to have a terminal illness with an estimated prognosis of 6 months or less to live. Many people come on to hospice very late, within days to weeks of death. But, there are also those who we think may not have long to live, and once they begin receiving the care and attention from the hospice team, they start actually feeling better. Symptoms are managed, regular nursing visits are occurring to help avoid crisis, and additional support staff are helping the patient and family cope. Signing up for hospice does not mean giving up. It means shifting your care to take place in your home (or residence), focusing on symptom management, and maintaining the best quality of life possible.
