Building an aircraft that never has to land.

关于我们

Devorto is building an aircraft that never has to land. Solar-powered aircraft provide better capabilities than satellite networks, but for the cost and logistics of operating an unmanned system. While existing high-altitude pseudo-satellite (HAPS) attempts can only operate under ideal solar conditions, Devorto is developing a novel architecture called the Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN). Designed and patented by a former NASA engineer, and with R&D funding from NASA and the US Air Force, this unconventional approach is 10X more efficient than fixed-wing without sacrificing vertical takeoff. Persistent flight within the stratosphere opens the doors to global Internet connectivity, broadband speed telecom relay hubs, and unprecedented environmental/weather monitoring capabilities.

In addition to the A&D electronics consulting business with Aerospace BD, LLC, I’m happy to share that I’m starting an additional pursuit as Chief Growth Officer (fractional in nature) at Devorto! Devorto Corporation is building an aerospace vehicle that isn’t just another piecemeal improvement on high-altitude unmanned platform designs, but a totally new architectural approach. This patented approach, called the Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN), delivers the best attributes of both a helicopter (vertical take-off and landing) and airplane (superior lift), all in one platform. TURN will offer persistent, solar-powered flight up to the stratosphere for a myriad of commercial and defense use cases. A recipient of both private and government (NASA, Air Force, and Space Force) funding, Devorto aims to disrupt the traditional LEO satellite and HAPS markets.

Skydweller Aero, which was built upon the Solar Impulse 2, is now pursuing a High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) capability. It has a rich history having completed the first piloted solar-powered global circumnavigation. It was accomplished through mission legs where each one typically spanned two or three days. This current embodiment has a 236-foot wingspan which is comparable to a Boeing 747 but weighs approximately 5000 pounds which is akin to an average pickup truck. Its reliance on a traditional fixed-wing design, albeit refined and optimized over a two-decade period, still poses aerodynamic challenges. The airfoil's thickness-to-chord ratio exceeds 20%, which is necessary for structural integrity. But it limits the aerodynamic efficiency, resulting in modest Lift-to-Drag ratios around 70. Conversely, innovative designs like the Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN) aircraft, developed by Devorto, feature thin-thickness and high-camber airfoils with Lift-to-Drag ratios that exceed 230. TURN overcomes the limitations that are ubiquitous to traditional fixed-wing solar-powered aircraft. Incorporating system rotation as a design element places wings under tension, which overcomes these aerodynamic inefficiencies. Slender wings are just one of the design features from this innovative aerial platform which will revolutionize the efficiency and feasibility of solar-powered flight. As development progresses, TURN represents a significant step forward shaping a future where solar energy powers the skies with unprecedented efficiency and endurance. #devorto #turnuav #solarpoweredaircraft https://lnkd.in/e9CH-ZTD

Congratulations to Amprius Technologies, Inc.! Amprius has some of the most promising silicone anode batteries available. Typically, certifications are more common for already established technologies that have a historical track record. The fact that Amprius was able to obtain this certification is a testament to their product and manufacturing capabilities. At Devorto we're looking forward to working with Amprius, to employ their batteries on the Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN), our solar-powered High-Altitude Platform Station (HAPS) aircraft. #devorto #turnuav #solarpoweredaircraft https://lnkd.in/eScThqAi

    Strategy @ ZeroEyes

Sharing some major #breakingnews this morning: the State of Utah has funded ZeroEyes optical #firearmdetection solution across ALL 1,086 K-12 public and charter schools in the state. In conjunction with our partners AEGIX AIM, who will be deploying their critical incident management solution, this effort culminated after a year of working with the state legislature, the Utah State Board of Education, and other key stakeholders. ? Why did Utah choose ZeroEyes? ? ? Unparalleled performance and execution, and a demonstrated track record of success. ZeroEyes is the only capability provider on the market that provides this service at scale and with stability across tens of thousands of cameras. The ability to turn any digital IP camera into a firearm detection sensor is a major force multiplier at scale. ? It turns out that standards really matter - US federal government validation, data and information management certifications, meaningful intellectual property, etc. are foundational to build trust and credibility with policymakers. ? Increasingly important - ZeroEyes organically develops every aspect of our platform, from data collection, to annotation, to building the platform, to providing verification and notification services. Everything is built and operated here in the United States, and no aspect of our platform is offshored. Governments (both federal and state) are increasingly attuned to #publicsafety risks from software manufacturers that offshore their development - there are both underlying national security and major quality control risks. ? ?? Utah is the first state to codify and standardize #firearmdetection capability into statute for baseline #schoolsecurity, and we believe many more will follow in the coming years. ZeroEyes continues to lead the charge! ? ?? Read our joint press release with AEGIX AIM here:?https://lnkd.in/eGpHuJf9

John Deere selects satellite connectivity from SpaceX as a backup to their LTE service for their autonomous tractors. This connectivity lets farmers have a real-time view of their equipment. It operates with sensors and cameras, where critical information is sent as alerts to the farmer, and more extensive data for soil health and emissions is sent to the cloud where it is processed and compiled into a comprehensive report. They even demonstrated the capability at the CES show in Las Vegas, by commanding and controlling a tractor in Texas. Because Starlink needs a dish, this service will only be available to new tractors, and cannot be retrofitted onto existing ones. "We are bringing satellite communications service to the farm at scale so farmers with cellular coverage challenges can maximize the value of connectivity to their operations," said Jahmy Hindman, SVP and CTO at John Deere, in a statement. This is amazing news for farmers. It really showcases the power of connectivity, and the benefit of the Internet of Things (IoT) for autonomous vehicles (AV). Farmers typically have a labor crunch in the fall when they need to both harvest and till their fields at the same time. If both aren't complete within a short timeframe, then next year's harvest is at risk. With autonomous tractors this activity is much more efficient. One of the main limitations of this set up is that it needs a dedicated device for the Starlink connection. These tractors are already equipped with LTE capabilities provided by AT&T, but the hardware connecting to cell phone towers is substantially different from the satellite dish required for Starlink. But since LTE and 5G coverage have gaps in their coverage, primarily in rural areas where they do not want to build the infrastructure, satellite connectivity is currently the only option available to solve this need. The good news is that the dilemma of having to flip-flop between mobile and satellite networks will soon be a thing of the past. This type of rural connectivity is a primary use case for the High-Altitude Platform Station from Devorto. The Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN) operates in the stratosphere, which is 30X closer than Starlink, and will provide 5G connectivity without the hassle of a satellite dish. #devorto #turnuav #solarpoweredaircraft https://lnkd.in/dKmHAb94

Right now, SpaceX is about the only rocket launch service available. The European Space Agency - ESA doesn't have a suitable rocket solution for space missions. While the Space Launch System holds potential, it still lacks enough history to instill a high degree of confidence. Like it or not, SpaceX is really the only game in town when it comes to reusable rockets for human?space exploration. Is this a bad thing? Perhaps not. NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration held the position that their mission was to?deliver?good science, so they decommissioned the space shuttle because?they were heading into an "Uber for Space" type of arrangement. Cutting ties with the space shuttle may have been the plunge needed to refocus on the longer term science and human exploration objectives. The main qualm is that launching rockets is still not a scalable process. SpaceX has increased their launch frequency, but is still limited by the number of launch?sites, and can be hindered by the weather which may scrub a meticulously?planned schedule. To service Starlink, which needs 42k satellites with a five year serviceable life, SpaceX will need to run about four launches per week to maintain that constellation. That's a lot of time/money/effort which will produce an astronomical amount of space debris. Instead, SpaceX should maintain a singularity of purpose delivering Elon's vision of humanity becoming an interplanetary species. But using satellites to deliver broadband Internet is not the most practical or responsible?solution. That's better left to High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS), like the Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN) from Devorto. #devorto #turnuav #solarpoweredaircraft https://lnkd.in/eMHrCyT9

The state of California has endured some of the worst wildfires in recent history. These are the stats from 2020: ?? Burned 4 million acres, ??Lost 8500 structures, ??Estimated $20B in property damage, ??30 deaths. Some citizens are calling for a change in how this destructive force is addressed. Specifically, they want to bring together the best minds from across various disciplines and are proposing that a privately funded organization coordinates the effort. The goal would be to let California and California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) effectively partner with the private sector and other government agencies. The author of the article, Peter Shannon, states that, “A focus on rapid response to target the first minutes and hours of a new wildfire is vital. Fires grow geometrically, meaning they soon become impractical to extinguish, with containment becoming a long, costly and dangerous undertaking.” Devorto currently has a Customer Memorandum with the Washington Air National Guard within the United States Air Force. This sentiment was also vocalized, where the first six hours largely determines whether a wildfire is contained in six days... or six weeks. One of the most exciting applications for the Tethered Uni-Rotor Network (TURN) is that its vastly increased flight endurance will not only remove people from harm’s way by eliminating the need for a piloted aircraft, but it will also significantly reduce the operational cost for the US taxpayer, which currently runs about $2k-$3k per hour to provide aerial imagery. ?? #devorto #turnuav #solarpoweredaircraft https://lnkd.in/eM8HniYs
