It's called ARCTIC but when it comes to testing capabilities for next-generation rotorcraft, it is hot off the presses. The Advanced Rotorcraft Configurations Test of Increased Capability simulation collects data and ratings in support of ongoing science and technology work aimed at informing evolving handling qualities requirements for Future Vertical Lift advanced configurations. Just a few accomplishments: ARCTIC has demonstrated feasibility / benefit of thrust control lever for advanced FVL configurations, impact of linked vs. unlinked controls on crew coordination -- ensuring future us Army Army aircraft will require linked controls for increased aircrew coordination and developed new high-speed terrain-flight surrogate handling qualities demonstrator maneuvers to ensure future aircraft will have the high-speed maneuverability necessary for low level flight. It also has assessed handling qualities and survivability benefits of damage tolerant control to increase future aircraft resilience to damage/failure, investigated novel response types for increased safety and cognitive offloading, quantified workload and mission effectiveness benefits of full-authority fly-by-wire and assessed ability to fly high-speed terrain flight with night vision goggles to inform future requirements.
