Luciano Pavarotti, the legendary tenor, left a huge mark on Detroit—but did you know there was a Pavarotti look-alike contest before his iconic 1988 performance at Joe Louis Arena? While the real Pavarotti wasn't there, his doppelgangers definitely were. Born on October 12, 1935, in Modena, Italy, Pavarotti was known for his “larger-than-life showmanship that helped expand the popularity of opera.” Detroit witnessed his magic across three decades—from Joe Louis Arena to the historic inaugural concert at the Detroit Opera House, a Three Tenors stop at Tiger Stadium, and finally, at the Palace of Auburn Hills. "What impressed me was he was as excited to be here as we were," said longtime Detroit Opera communications expert Laura Nealssohn, recalling Pavarotti's reaction to the Detroit Opera House's grand opening. We were honored to have held a special relationship with Luciano Pavarotti and to have hosted something as fun as the lookalike contest that celebrated his legacy.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo - a company that breaks down the barriers to “traditional” ballet. In 1974, when ballet enthusiasts decided to bring humor into the strict world of classical dance, The Trocks became a global phenomenon. What started as a cheeky off-Broadway performance in New York, turned into an international celebration of ballet—one that blends en pointe precision with playful parody and defies the stereotypical outlook of ballet that only women can perform en pointe, or at least well. The Trocks aren't just men in tutus (although they do rock them). They're a living, breathing embodiment of what happens when technique meets satire. They have made their mark by showcasing a diverse cast of male dancers performing iconic female personas, from Swan Lake to The Dying Swan, with the perfect balance of elegance and comedic brilliance. A legacy built on breaking barriers, celebrating individuality, and challenging gender norms, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo proves that dance isn’t just about the steps—it’s about storytelling, joy, and bringing a little bit of laughter to the stage. See the trendsetting Trocks on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, November 24, at 2:30 PM. Tickets start at $30. https://lnkd.in/g7BpjR9k

Did you ever think ballet could go beyond the “traditional” set structure of movements like pirouettes, pliés, fifth position, and more? Each movement and gesture in ballet has a purpose, contributing to the emotion and story conveyed like in famous ballets such as “Swan Lake” and “The Nutcracker.” Ballet is a classical dance form dating back to the Italian Renaissance in the 15th century. In modern times, it has expanded to include many styles and fashions, such as neoclassical, contemporary, and even comedic interpretations, as seen in Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo, aka The Trocks, an all-male dance company. The Trocks perform traditional ballet works but incorporate their own style into the art form. One of the first things they do that breaks away from the conventional style is each dancer performs as both male and their alter-persona female roles, adding exaggerated gestures, comedic timing, and intentional “mistakes” that humorously highlight the intensity and complexity of classical ballet. See how they bring innovation to this classic art form on the Detroit Opera House stage on Saturday, November 23, at 7:30 PM and Sunday, November 24, at 2:30 PM. Tickets start at $30 at https://lnkd.in/g7BpjR9k
