We are THRILLED that Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo are kicking off their national tour at the Detroit Opera House! Natalia Holtzman of HOUR Detroit gives a glimpse into what you can expect: "In Trockadero performances, male dancers perform roles traditionally danced by women — en pointe and in tutus, a nearly unheard-of rarity (if not a downright impossibility) in the classical ballet world. But for half a century now, the Trocks, as they’re familiarly known, have maintained a seemingly unattainable balance between parody and humor, on the one hand, and highly skilled, precisely delineated classical technique, on the other. “We try to have lots of different kinds of comedy; lots of different types of ballets; lots of different types of music, costuming, and personalities onstage,” Dobrin says. “We just throw the whole gamut at the audience.” In Detroit, the Trocks will perform selections from Swan Lake, The Dying Swan, and Balanchine’s Tarantella, among others, toying with gender roles and stereotypes as they go." You can secure your tickets now, at detroitopera.org!

In opera, it’s easy to notice the amazing wardrobe, but the accessories can sometimes go overlooked. One particular accessory in “La traviata”—the camellia flower—stands out not for its appearance, but for its significance. Violetta wears this particular flower throughout the opera; some of you may already know its meaning! “La traviata,” inspired by Alexandre Dumas’s novel turned play “La Dame aux Camélias” (The Lady of Camellias), was written within one year of well-known Parisian courtesan Marie Duplessis’s death. The story is based on their love affair which lasted until her death in 1847—she died of consumption after just turning 23. Marie’s favorite flowers were camellias. She wore white camellias to signal when she was available to her lover(s) and red when she was occupied, which gave her the name The Lady of the Camellias. Like Marie, Violetta rose from poverty to be one of the most glamorous courtesans in Paris. She has a notable fashion sense; she lives a carefree life and enjoys spending time in the glamorous social scene. Come see for yourself the beauty of the camellia flower during our production of “La traviata.” https://lnkd.in/gVV2wcTu
