“Sweet, sweet blue and gold. That sweet, sweet blue and gold!” ? Pershing Doughboys and Doughgirls were filled with pride as Detroit Public Schools Community District, under the leadership of our Superintendent Dr. Nikolai Vitti and our locally elected board, unveiled the renderings of the future Pershing High School New campus on Friday,? Oct. 25, which was also Homecoming Day for the high school. ? This is the second groundbreaking ceremony of the six new school buildings being developed according to the the District’s 20-year Facilities Master Plan (FMP). DPSCD will reimagine the campus originally built in 1929, infusing innovation and preserving legacy. Construction of the $77 Million dollar building will begin in 2025 and is expected to be complete by 2027. Its athletics complex will follow and is slated to open by Spring 2029, exactly one hundred years since Pershing first opened. ? Expanding Joy ????? At DPSCD, we believe that every Detroit child deserves happy, joyful learning spaces designed to meet their unique identities and needs. Over the last three years, DPSCD has committed to increasing the amount of full-time FREE, preschool options for families in every community. This means expanding our Pre-K programs to now include over 55 school locations and 150+ classrooms across the entire district. Because we know joy goes beyond the classroom, we’ve simultaneously invested in the repair, restoration, and/or installation of 75 playgrounds in our K-8 schools in Detroit. Paul Robeson Malcolm X Academy Prepares for New Building — As the school year begins, parents, staff and students at Paul Robeson Malcolm X Academy are surrounded by community, filled with excitement, and anxiously begin the countdown until their brand-new school is built in 2027. Until then, they are creating a home away from home at their temporary location, 14771 Mansfield Street, where the district even built a new playground on-site so students can safely play. PRMXA was identified in the District’s 20-year facility master plan as one of five new school buildings coming to the city. We recently hosted a school engagement meeting to ensure community, alumni, staff, and students’ input is incorporated in the design and construction process. Facility Master Plan Spotlight Pershing High School to get a new building! #DidYouKnow? Pershing High School, the home of the Doughboys, is one of five schools set to receive a brand-new building! Slated to open in Fall 2027, this state-of-the-art facility is part of the District’s Facility Master Plan. Pershing High School is a cornerstone of Detroit’s rich legacy and pride and we’re committed to honoring that tradition in every aspect of the new design. Pershing’s own, “Queen” Ann Connally (Class of ‘69) and Joan Pentsil (Class of ‘76), are playing pivotal roles in ensuring that Pershing’s history is integrated into the new building. Their insights are helping to create a space where future students will thrive in an environment tailored to their needs. Our Capital Projects and construction design teams are collaborating closely with alumni, students, community members, and Principal Tipton. Their collective voices, ideas, and feedback are at the heart of this project. Recently, at a school design meeting, we reviewed exciting new plans and color schemes with the proud alumni and Principal Tipton. Stay tuned for more updates as we continue to build a bright future for Pershing High School! — Follow our journey as we share updates on the story of Pershing High School’s new building.
