关于我们
The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) is a nonprofit organization that operates the Detroit Zoo in Royal Oak, Mich. and the Belle Isle Nature Center, located in Detroit. Accredited by the Association of Zoos & Aquariums, DZS employs approximately 350 full and part-time employees and hosts more than 500 volunteers throughout the year. The 125-acre Detroit Zoo is a natural habitat for more than 2,000 animals. Major exhibits include the National Amphibian Conservation Center, Polk Penguin Conservation Center, Deveraux Tiger Forest, Great Apes of Harambee and Arctic Ring of Life, voted the number-two zoo exhibit in the U.S. by the Intrepid Traveler’s guide to “America’s Best Zoos”. The Belle Isle Nature Center, nestled on 6 acres of Michigan's forested wetland on the northeastern tip of Belle Isle State Park, offers guests unique educational, environmental and natural experiences that help connect them with urban nature. Admission to the Belle Isle Nature Center is free of charge.

In addition, this event will promote small businesses and those located within the city of Detroit. ? Registration is due on Dec. 2. If this sounds like an opportunity for you or for someone you know, make sure to follow this link to learn what potential commodities we're interested in: dzoo.org/dvfair24

You’ve seen the posts and made your best guesses – now, the wait is over! ???? ? We’re thrilled to introduce Jagger, a 3-year-old sloth bear and the first of her kind at the Detroit Zoo in decades. While she’s still behind the scenes, the Zoo’s newest resident will be venturing outdoors in the next week – and this year, your Giving Zoo Day gift can directly impact Jagger’s life as she settles into her new habitat. ? Donations this year will go toward enrichment items like a wobble chair, a food ball and more that will enhance her new habitat and promote her well-being through interactive play. ? Here's the cherry on top ?? - thanks to the generous Jeffrey Farber Family Foundation, your kindness will have double the impact! Every donation up to $5,000 will be matched dollar for dollar. That means your generosity goes twice as far to enrich Jagger’s new home — along with all the animals who call the Zoo home! To learn more: https://lnkd.in/g_ZUCrdE

Learning in the wild on Belle Isle! This October, the Belle Isle Nature Center returned as one of several organizations partnering on the island to give back to Detroit youth through the Big Belle Isle Lesson! The Big Belle Isle Lesson was inspired by former Michigan Teacher of the Year, Margaret Holtschlag, in 1999 and cultivated by Dr. June Teisan. Teachers and students from the Bunche Academy’s deaf and hard of hearing classrooms and Academy of the Americas’ English as a Second Language classrooms were invited for an entire week of immersive, nature-based learning on Belle Isle. Students explored the island, conducted bird observations, collected data on water quality, journaled and so much more. The field trips are followed by classroom visits from Nature Center educators to reinforce students’ connections to animals and nature. The Big Belle Isle Lesson is an excellent example of our commitment to being an organization without borders and we can’t wait to see how much BIGGER the lesson becomes!

Do you know a student who truly wants to make the world a greener place? If so, then have them submit a proposal to GreenPrize! ???? The DZS GreenPrize Award Program encourages students from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties to establish “EcoClubs” or “Green Teams” at their schools and design a project that will benefit their community and the environment. Teams with the best project proposals can then earn a grant to bring their vision to life! Eco-champions have until Nov. 11 to submit their proposals. Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3YGCsEX.
