At Detroit Public Theatre, every month feels like Women’s History Month. After all, in 2015, Detroit Public Theatre was founded by three dynamic women—Courtney Burkett, Sarah Clare Corporandy, and Sarah Winkler. Recognizing the need for a professional theatre that collaborated with both local and national artists, they created DPT to fill that void, shaping a space where bold, transformative storytelling thrives. Let’s take a moment to celebrate our fearless leaders, who have balanced it all—as only women do—to make DPT what it is today! Over the past decade, there have been many milestones, including: ? Commissioning "Birthday Candles" by Noah Haidle, which premiered at DPT in 2018 and later graced Broadway stages. ? Welcoming Dominique Morisseau—a Tony-nominated playwright and Detroit native—who has been integral to DPT since 2015 as an advisor, collaborator, and founding board member. In November 2020, she expanded her role as Executive Artistic Producer, joining the leadership team alongside the founding producing artistic directors. ? Opening our Third Street Garage space in Midtown in 2022, further solidifying our commitment to the city of Detroit and its vibrant theatre community. Today and every day, we honor these remarkable women and the countless others who make theatre a force for change. Join us in celebrating their unwavering dedication, vision, and leadership! ??
