NEW: op-ed by DWN's program director Stacy in Truthout “Now is the time not only to hold the line and defend existing sanctuary policies, but to go even further to implement policies that can throw a wrench into the deportation machine. Localities can expand existing protections to all immigrants without excluding people who have had contact with the criminal legal system; prohibit data sharing; extend safeguards in places like hospitals, schools and courthouses; and refuse to contract with ICE to establish immigration detention centers in their communities,” said Stacy. Sanctuary policies allow all people to feel safe and welcome in their neighborhoods and ensure that our immigrant neighbors don’t have to live with the fear that going about their daily lives or reporting issues to local authorities could lead to the deportation of a loved one. This helps keep everyone safe.?

This past year, I’ve had the honor of working alongside the brilliant Silky Shah, Executive Director at Detention Watch Network, with Narrative Initiative, on her powerful book Unbuild Walls: Why Immigrant Justice Needs Abolition at Haymarket Books! Together, Silky and I co-wrote a new op-ed in Teen Vogue, where we break down: ?? The urgent threats we face under a Trump 2.0 presidency ?? The importance of multiracial and intergenerational coalition building ?? How young people can take action to build long-term power and collective resistance Starting my PhD in Ethnic Studies at the University of California, Berkeley last fall has been a deeply personal journey that ties directly to my passion for building bridges across communities. My research focuses on building multiracial coalitions and cross-cultural solidarity—work that feels more urgent than ever. As we reflect on the lessons learned from 2016, now is the time to double down on coalition building and fostering solidarity. Let’s continue to build a future rooted in justice and collective liberation.

It is clear that Trump’s intention is to terrorize communities and disrupt lives by targeting immigrants, including ending ICE’s Sensitive Locations Policy and humanitarian parole. These directives will cause immediate suffering & lasting harm to the nation. https://lnkd.in/gRHveV-C

Trump has promised the expansion of immigration detention and mass raids, which are designed to instill fear and dehumanize our immigrant family members, friends, coworkers, and neighbors. These challenges may seem insurmountable, but we know how much power we have within our community. DWN plays a unique role in the fight to end immigration detention by bridging the gap between community organizing by local organizations and activists across the country and national strategies. We are ready to work, and we hope you will join us. Thanks to a generous donor, all gifts made this month are being matched up to $10,000! We are resolute in our commitment to fight Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda. We find solace in the millions of voices resisting Trump’s agenda of hate. We remain inspired by the strength in communities across the country uniting for the rights and dignity of immigrants and power in the immigrant people who must unfairly face the immoral and heartless attacks of the Trump regime. As an organization that deeply cares for the dignity, freedom, and safety of all people we are committed to fighting tooth and nail against the Trump administration’s anti-immigrant agenda and the racist ideology at its core. We expect swift and cruel enforcement tactics designed to create a media spectacle that will dehumanize and criminalize our immigrant family members, friends, coworkers, and neighbors while stripping away the already limited protections people have to live and work in the United States without fear of being targeted, detained, and exiled from their loved ones. We are bracing for the suffering ahead while knowing that we still have power. We will not allow the Trump administration or anyone else, including Democratic leaders, to drown out our vision towards more humane and just immigration policy.
