Rarely has an article been able to capture all sides of the project. But the "Crenshaw at the Crossroads" piece in Alta's Reckoning with the West Issue by Lynell George does just that. Ms. George was able to capture the complicated relationship that community members have with gentrification, and the nostalgia and hope that driving down Crenshaw Boulevard evokes in so many people. That's why this project means so much to so many people. Check out this piece: https://lnkd.in/gzRi73je

Our mission is to celebrate and chronicle the history and culture of Black Los Angeles while revitalizing Crenshaw Blvd.
关于我们
Destination Crenshaw (DC) is a shovel-ready, public/private cultural infrastructure and workforce development project created to dramatically repair, revitalize, and sustain the Crenshaw Corridor, the most iconic Black Business corridor in LA in the heart of the largest Black community on the West Coast. An African American-led project on a self-determined site, DC was created to feature the Black artists of LA and to create new physical monuments to illuminate the historic contributions and continued strength of Black LA. Explicitly cited as one of the Five-Year Implementation Plan Actions recommended by the City of Los Angeles Citywide Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (LACEDS), DC will spark “corridor revitalization, stabilization, and creation of a job-producing hub for culture and entertainment.” This 1.3-mile outdoor “people’s museum” will run along both sides of Crenshaw Boulevard at the new Crenshaw/LAX Metro Line and will consist of an historic 100-plus public art commissions by Black Angeleno artists; new infrastructure (including performance venues, pocket parks, parking, safety improvements, and sidewalks); and 30,000 square feet of sustainable landscaping including 822 trees. Each park will be a site for public art and a variety of community and civic activities, including informal gatherings, protests, performances, and farmers markets, building a cultural campus that will attract local residents, tourists, and the estimated 5.9 million annual riders on the Metro line alike.

BizFed Institute will hold its inaugural?Business Resiliency Forum?on?Thursday, September 12. This forum will address the unique challenges of doing business in California and unpack actionable solutions that keep job creators from leaving the state. We're fans of Kevin G. Harbour, Sr., and the work of this organization to promote more economic development investment in the Crenshaw District. More information on the event, visit their website https://lnkd.in/gHb9PTSQ

Thank you to Michelson 20MM Foundation for supporting our digital equity programming in the Crenshaw District. Our partnership with California State University-Dominguez Hills's WIN program and the City of Los Angeles's community connectivity pilot drive this important work and create solutions that innovate how nonprofits can appear in the space. We're excited to use our funding to market these programs and ensure the Crenshaw district is aware of these partnerships.
Destination Crenshaw is on track to deliver high-speed fiber-to-the-home and free public Wi-Fi to South Los Angeles, addressing digital disparities and fostering community empowerment. Through a 2024 #DigitalEquity Michelson #SparkGrant, they will take a significant step towards bridging the digital divide and advancing local connectivity. Sharing some of The Christian Science Monitor's recent article on Destination Crenshaw, "From overlooked to must-see. LA community’s big statement with Black-centered art." “These things are so tied intrinsically together, the money with the architecture with the benefit of the community,” says Valery Augustin, AIA, an architect and assistant professor at the University of Southern California. “You need that investment for communities to stay places that people want to go to. And if people won’t invest in communities, then your built areas can’t possibly thrive.” We could not agree more. https://lnkd.in/ee5sTh_H

Another step forward || The year 2023 was impactful for Destination Crenshaw. We increased our in-person engagement through DC Thrive and workforce development. We also started construction on the remaining pocket parks for the project, marking the upcoming realization of our mission to boost the boulevard through economic development, job creation, and environmental healing while celebrating Black art and culture. Our project consists of community spaces and pocket parks, hundreds of newly planted trees, and, over 5-7 years, the installation of 100 commissioned works of art. When completed, Destination Crenshaw will provide the most dynamic expression of Black American culture in the U.S. by leveraging the power of the arts, culture, and business in South Los Angeles. As Black Culture moves the world, we see our project driving a broader regional agenda for self-determination in the Black community. Check out our 2023 Impact Report for information on all our programs. https://lnkd.in/geWVq6Zb
