While our Dr. Charles Fountain Interns are returning to school, we continue to be inspired by what they achieved this summer!!! This year’s interns had the special opportunity to reimagine Augustus F. Hawkins Park, a beloved green space in South Los Angeles. The program focused on designing a vision that will ensure this 8.5-acre historic park continues to serve the community for the next 25 years and beyond—not as a tourist destination, but as a preserved and enhanced oasis for local residents and natural wildlife. Originally transformed from a brownfield pipe yard in response to the community’s need for a safer space and a connection to nature, the park remains a vital social and environmental asset, deeply rooted in collaboration and community values. The original designer, Stephanie Landregan, MSPM, PLA, FASLA, LEED BD and C, shared her insights with the interns, recounting the early challenges of engaging and building trust in a community impacted by social and political unrest. Throughout their time on-site, the interns conducted research using ArcGIS Field Mapping and engaged directly with Parks Board members and local residents. Their design proposals focused on key elements like improving circulation, enhancing security, increasing parking, providing universal access, and updating the park’s plantings. They also explored new programming opportunities, such as events and activities for younger children, while incorporating CPTED principles like pedestrian lighting and better sight lines to ensure the park remains a safe and welcoming space for all.

"Phenomenal, aspirational, creative, and refreshing.” City Council members of Frisco, Texas were thrilled with our concept for the 300-acre core of Grand Park, the highlight and hub of what will become over 1,000 acres of open space in the coming years. Located near Downtown Frisco, the park will provide a wide array of experiences, from kayaking ponds and playgrounds to a monumental amphitheater and over 14 miles of trails. We’re thrilled to help bring this vision to life: providing play, exploration, discovery, and connection to the people of Frisco! #frisco?#texas?#grandpark?#downtownfrisco?#parks?#ponds?#playgrounds?#amphitheater?#trails?#visionplan?#landscapearchitecture

Our Aspen and Denver studios recently embarked on a field trip to the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens in Vail and the The Gallegos Corporation Stone Yard in Gypsum. At the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens, our team explored diverse areas including the waterwise garden, pollinator garden, and alpine species from around the world—from the Himalayas to South Africa and our own Rocky Mountains. We learned about the gardens' evolution through various vision plans, and how their origins focused on showcasing the potential for perennials to thrive in high alpine environments. The Curator of Plant Collections shared insights on installing their latest crevice garden, which is knowledge we look forward to applying in our own projects. Following the gardens, we visited the Gallegos Stone Yard, where we were given a tour of the 20+ acre facility by Marcette Gordon, Jim Bingaman, and their team. We gained valuable insights into their marble and stone operations, best practices for material specifications, and how we can enhance our collaboration to benefit both DW and our clients. The tour emphasized the importance of lead times and the value of direct communication with Gallegos, ensuring seamless project execution. We want to give a huge thanks to both teams at the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and Gallegos for taking the time to show us around and give us insight into their work. We felt so welcomed and are grateful for the opportunity to learn from both teams. #fieldtrip #gallegos #bettyfordalpinegarden #vail #colorado #tour #gypsum #stoneyard #alpinegarden
