  • A letter from our Co-founder and CEO: Over the past few weeks, many people have asked us how the change in USAID funding will impact the work of Design Outreach. When I first learned about the spending freezes, I reached out to our Africa Field Director Dr. Beatrice Chisenga, and she quickly sent me an extensive list of organizations that are directly impacted. Our hearts grieve for the many organizations whose ministries will come to a halt because of the cut in funding and we pray for their resilience during this time of uncertainty. While we do not depend on federal assistance, DO’s ministry will be indirectly affected. With so many other organizations unable to provide humanitarian aid, the critical need for life-saving resources like clean water and sanitation will grow exponentially, and Design Outreach is committed to continuing to stand in the gap for the world’s most vulnerable people. You might be wondering—how can I help? One source cited that if every American Christian gave just $189, it would equate to USAID’s budget in 2023. That seems so achievable. It is our prayer that the American church steps up to be the hands and feet of Jesus during these unprecedented times—will you join us? Thank you for your care, compassion, and partnership in the Gospel! In Christ, Greg Bixler, Ph.D., P.E. Co-founder | CEO “The King will answer, ‘Truly I say to you, as you have done it for one of the least of these brothers of Mine, you have done it for Me.’” – Matthew 25:40 ––– Design Outreach (DO) is a Christian nonprofit organization that seeks to alleviate global poverty by creating innovative, life-sustaining solutions that help transform marginalized and low-income communities physically, economically, and spiritually. As a team of engineers with diverse experience and areas of expertise, DO focuses on innovative products that improve the lives of the most marginalized and vulnerable people living in developing countries. As followers of Jesus Christ, we desire to share and show God’s love by providing technologies that empower people to break the cycle of poverty. Field Update: Government Officials Request More LifeLatrine? Products LifeLatrine? was met with enthusiasm and gratitude during a recent field inspection. The Ministry of Health, Ministry of Water and Sanitation, and Wesnet officials conducted inspections of 30 LifeLatrine? products in Malawi. They expressed their satisfaction with this innovative solution and requested more products for scaling up. This affordable, reliable sanitation solution is a critical part of Design Outreach’s mission to alleviate global poverty. More than a billion people do not have access to basic sanitation services, contributing to nearly 829,000 deaths annually from diarrheal diseases, a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in many parts of the world. LifeLatrine? will help families meet their basic sanitation needs with dignity, while reducing incidences of waterborne diseases and improving their overall quality of life. Without addressing the critical need for sustainable and affordable sanitation solutions, the fight against poverty can never be won. LifeLatrine? is empowering vulnerable communities and making a lasting impact on global health and wellbeing. We are excited for what’s to come. • We live in an age of remarkable technological advancement. Billions of dollars are spent on ever-smarter smartphones, streaming devices, self-driving cars, and automation—yet they all primarily cater to the comfort and convenience of people living in the world’s most affluent nations. It’s a remarkable era of technological riches—for those of us who have never gone thirsty. For nearly half of all people worldwide—those who survive on less than $5.50 a day—new technologies that answer even the most basic human needs are too slow to come. This we have been called to change. https://doutreach.org/.
