Curator and writer Priya Khanchandani highlights the successful launch of Design Mumbai this November and the Indian creatives to look out for. We're reflecting back on a successful inaugural edition of #DesignMumbai. It truly was a show to remember – featuring cutting-edge design and innovation from brands based in India and beyond to the Design Mumbai Exchange talks programme, which drew renowned architects, designers and cultural commentators from across the globe. “We're thrilled and overwhelmed by the positive response we've received from our exhibitors, visitors, our media attendees and the speakers who took part in our Design Mumbai Exchange talks programme. We cannot express enough gratitude to our supporters and partners," explain Design Mumbai founders Piyush Suri, Ian Rudge and Michael Dynan. "There was a clear gap in the global design calendar for a truly international show in India, and our mission was to fill it with a highly curated yet commercially focused event produced to the highest quality that is genuinely useful to the design and architecture trade in the region. We feel we have achieved this in the show’s first edition and look forward to driving even more impact and connection in 2025.”

Huge congratulations to LOCO Design India – the winner of the Design Mumbai Selects Best Stand Award 2024! The Design Mumbai Selects jury – formed of Ridhi Kale (Editor of India Today Home), industrial designer Richard Hutten (Richard Hutten Studio BV) and Carolyn Larkin (Founding Director of Caro Communications) and Amit Gupta (Editor-in-Chief of STIR) – chose the Loco Design stand for its "attention to detail and prioritisation of quality,” according to Richard Hutten. For the inaugural edition of Design Mumbai, Loco Design presented Palodia, a capsule collection of conceptual furniture developed in collaboration with global architecture studio UHA. “Palodia is a meaningful intersection of art, architecture and design. It translates an architectural project of UHA’s into a sculptural model, and further develops the narrative to produce limited edition design collectibles range for any artistically sensitive interior space," commented Amit Gupta. "The collection reinforces Design Mumbai’s curatorial positioning, giving a platform to an initiative that blends art, craft and technology seamlessly.” A high standard was delivered by all Design Mumbai Exhibitors for our inaugural edition – so we want to send a huge thank you to all!

?? Day 2 at #DesignMumbai! There was a buzz as visitors entered the show via the showstopping audio visual experience by KLING KLANG KLONG – getting swept up into the excitement of the show. Over at the Design Mumbai Exchange talks theatre, we hosted some of our most thought-provoking discussions curated by Caro Communications. Audiences also enjoyed the (Un)Affordable Housing talk by Eztablish Design – as well as an afternoon of insightful STIR ~log(ue) Sessions curated by STIR. Our coffee partner Blue Tokai Coffee Roasters has been on-hand to offer freshly brewed cups and our hospitality partner Soho House & Co Mumbai has greeted all visitors at the Soho House Lounge for some delicious refreshments. There’s still so much more to come during the final day of the show!

The Design Mumbai Exchange talks programme got off to a flying start! Numerous influential voices in the world of design took to the stage as our moderators hosted a fascinating line-up of talks – including Into the Light, Tech & Craft, Making a Circular Future, Conscious Colour and Hospitality Beyond the Image, all curated by Caro Communications. The day was tied up with a talk curated by our media partners Dezeen – where Benedict Hobson hosted a discussion on Indian design made for the world, with Arjun Malik (Malik Architecture), Disha Bhavsar (Quirk Studio) and Sarah Sham (Essajees Atelier).
