Platforms like Snapchat refuse to self-regulate despite what’s at stake. We need legislation. A September poll released by @IssueOneReform and @fairplayforkids revealed that 86% of US voters support the Kids Online Safety Act — let’s get it done.

??Big thanks to The Centre for Media, Technology and Democracy and Taylor Owen for hosting ATTENTION: The Kids Are All Right! ????After NYC, I was delighted to be briefly back in my native Canada to hear inspiring young leaders, parents, academics, and international experts discussing the impact of technology on children, Canadian legislative proposals and international advances. A few key takeaways: ???Children are bearing the brunt of the "attention arms race": Without strong safeguards and regulations in place, we're letting kids down while tech companies dodge responsibility for their predatory business practices and the harm built into their designs. They must be held accountable! ?? Youth are stepping up and saying, "Enough is enough": Organizations like Design It For Us and Maddie Freeman from NoSo are leading the charge for change. They're pushing for much-needed policy reform and youth empowerment, showing us the way towards safer and more responsible online platforms. ???Legal action is gaining momentum:?Neinstein LLP and Social Media Victims Law Center, alongside 40 state attorneys general and hundreds of school districts are suing social media giants for their addictive and mental-health-damaging products. ??????????Progress is happening across the pond: In both the UK and the EU, legislations like the Online Safety Act (OSA) and Digital Services Act (DSA) are proving that change is possible. It was energising to see leaders such as Damian Collins, Margrethe Vestager, and Věra Jourová call for their enforcement to ensure children's rights and safety. ???A global fight for a global priority:?As these platforms operate globally, the need for alignment across borders has never been clearer.
