Water sustainability must be a top priority for our industry. It's great to see the Global Wellness Summit addressing this crucial topic. Simple, common-sense changes can make a significant impact—starting with the textiles used in spa areas.?But, according to DFL's founder and CEO, Don Genders, the biggest challenge lies at the regulatory level. For example, drench showers use up to 40 liters per guest. Unlike locker room showers, which are used for full-body cleansing, drench showers primarily rinse off sweat before or after hydrothermal experiences. The potential savings would be enormous if industry standards were developed to classify them separately and allow for water sanitization and reuse. If the spa industry doesn’t take the lead in setting water-saving standards, external entities will do it for us. By proactively developing effective solutions, we can position ourselves as a driving force in water sustainability. Collaboration is key—we must work together to implement self-regulation and challenge the outdated codes and regulations contributing to water waste. Forward-thinking operators can play a crucial role in this evolution through embracing innovative water-saving technologies and processes. The upfront investment may be higher, but the long-term benefits for the environment and our industry could be transformative.
