This season has seen a record-breaking return of steelhead to the Deschutes River – the highest numbers recorded since the dams were completed in the 1960s. This achievement is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of our partners, including the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs, Oregon and Portland General Electric (PGE). ?? $95.7 Million in Federal Investment Will Help Restore Flows in Deschutes, Support Struggling Farmers A portion of this award funds a project that will increase flows in the Upper Deschutes River in the winter months by just under 4,000-acre feet (the equivalent of about one standard swimming pool every hour), helping to restore the river’s natural hydrograph while benefiting the ESA-listed Oregon Spotted Frog, native redband trout, and other species. The same amount of water will also be passed to North Unit Irrigation District in the summer months to help address water scarcity for the farming community around Madras. The Lava Island Fish Rescue is going down next week! With basin-wide conservation efforts underway, Deschutes River Conservancy expects this to be one of the last few years we will need this event. Flows in the Upper Deschutes are anticipated to be sufficient by 2028 (or before!) to keep Lava Island fish safe! Volunteer here: https://lnkd.in/gJuUDFPW

Get Your Hands Wet to Help the Fish! - In 2023, with the help of dozens of volunteers, we were able to rescue 7,000 fish from the drying side channel at Lava Island on the Upper Deschutes.
