My induction into the CLASS of 2025 HALL OF FAME of this prestigious institution of higher education is not a CELEBRATION but a TESTIMONY! Several years ago I was rejected by four division 1 college coaches within 24 hours, each of them asserting that “I wasn’t good or fast enough for a scholarship.” The fifth coach with whom I spoke that evening over a jerk chicken dinner on Park Heights Avenue in Baltimore saw and invested in my POTENTIAL instead of judging my current PERFORMANCE. My first day in the dorm room, I wrote the names of the four colleges and taped it to my dorm refrigerator for inspiration, and I never lost an 800m to any athlete from those colleges. Coppin State University, I owe you a debt of gratitude for the formidable academic foundation, as well as the lifelong and amazing friendships formed across sports, culture, and class. Today my life’s journey is anchored in LEADERSHIP and SERVICE that prioritizes POTENTIAL over current PERFORMANCE in children and adults. Mama, your son will be a HALL of FAME inductee! #ThePowerof7SecondChances??????????

A committee of Des Moines Public Schools stakeholders is working on an entirely new vision for DMPS, which could affect how and where students learn. The Facility Planning Committee of staff, parents and community members will develop a proposal for a new model of education for DMPS students, called the Reimagining Education initiative. The public will then get to review the proposal and share feedback, which will shape the committee’s final recommendation to the Board of Education. The Board will make the final decision.
