Under normal operation, the desiccant changes color as it adsorbs moisture. However, other colors may sometimes appear, often due to oil exposure from misting or splashing—especially in hydraulic systems. When silica gel adsorbs oil, it takes on the oil’s color, usually yellow. If the desiccant is already turning from the moisture, this combination can create an orange appearance. If the desiccant is not saturated yet, oil adsorption may cause it to appear dark in color (green or black). ? If your desiccant breather shows signs of oil contamination, it is best to replace it. Oil can fully saturate the desiccant and clog the particulate filter, potentially reducing airflow by 50% or more. To help prevent this, consider using a breather with an oil mist reduction feature or an oil demisting adapter. Other options include piping the breather farther from the reservoir and ensuring it is properly sized for the airflow demand. A recent inspection at a paper mill in Florida revealed that a DC-HG-8 desiccant breather had been in service since 2016—well beyond the recommended 6-9 month replacement interval. The desiccant had saturated (indicated by a color change), and the red plugs remained on the check valve, compromising functionality and potentially causing pressure buildup or overheating. Additionally, outdated branding confirms that the breather has exceeded its useful life. A: While cloudy oil can signify either air or water contamination, the most likely explanation is small amounts of water in the oil. Water exists in oil in three distinct phases: free, emulsified and dissolved. Cloudy oil is usually due to emulsified water. Since the saturation point of water in oil is temperature dependent, when the oil cools down, the water which is probably dissolved during normal operation comes out of solution as the oil cools with the lower overnight temperatures. Left un-checked, this can lead to premature gear and bearing failure due to corrosion. The easiest way to fix this issue is to use a desiccant breather to lower the headspace humidity inside the gearbox. By lowering the headspace humidity, you will also lower the amount of water in the oil, such that even when the temperature drops any water present will remain dissolved in the oil. #DesCase #AskTheExpert #WaterContaminationControl #DesiccantBreathers
