关于我们
The mission of the Department of Defense is to provide military forces necessary to protect the security of our country. The U.S. military defends the homeland, deters adversaries, and builds security around the world by projecting U.S. influence and working with allies and partners. In case deterrence fails, the U.S. military is prepared to fight and win decisively against any adversary. Headed by Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III, the Department is not only in charge of the military, it also employs a topnotch civilian workforce. With more than 1.3 million men and women on active duty, and 742,000 civilian personnel, we are also the nation's largest employer. The Pentagon, headquarters of the Department of Defense, is one of the largest office buildings in the world. Built in 1941 by the U.S. Army, the Pentagon has 17.5 miles of corridors yet it takes only seven minutes to walk between any two points in the building. Department of Defense personnel are the backbone of America’s national security. They represent the diverse makeup of our nation and support not only those on active duty but also families, veterans, and retirees through education, training, and benefit programs. Anything you want to do – on land, sea, air, or space -- you can do in service to your nation by joining the Department of Defense. #DYK that just about all materials release toxic chemicals? For most people, it’s not an issue, but for submariners and divers who don’t have access to fresh air 24/7, it can be hazardous. That’s why the US Navy does off-gas testing – a process that releases those chemicals to make sure every piece of clothing or equipment is safe to use in a deep submergence system. Experts at the Naval Undersea Warfare Center Division Keyport explain how it’s done.

#DYK that civilian employees make up about half of the United States Space Force? The Defense Civilian Training Corps (DCTC) wants more university graduates to know that they can be part of the military as civilian employees. It’s currently looking for more students to work with the service on scientific and problem-solving projects during their summer breaks.

Have you heard of global hydro-intelligence? It’s a strategic tool designed to predict and manage water-related risks for military leaders. Knowing things like soil moisture & temperature, snow cover and vegetation health can all help address and forecast extreme events — information that will arm warfighters, planners and decision makers with environmental assessments that can help determine how troops will be affected. The Space Development Agency will continue to use the Link 16 radio system broadly used by the U.S. and its allies as it builds out its Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. However, laser communication systems will help broaden that bandwidth.

“I just kept thinking, there’s got to be a faster or easier way to take these samples.” Thanks to United States Air Force Tech. Sgt. Collin Stratton’s innovative thinking, a new tool is cutting down on the time and steps required to take fuel samples from vehicles and mobile stations. The single-point nozzle adapter helps to ensure that aircraft fuel is free of water and other potential contamination. Learn more here: https://spr.ly/6041sUpUR

Imagine being in a spacecraft that gets hit and disabled by a micro meteor. You can’t just pull up to a repair station to fix it. That’s why the Air Force Research Laboratory joined scientists and engineers recently on a microgravity-simulating flight to explore the potential of autonomous laser welding in space. Successful manufacturing capabilities in space could one day support military missions by offering point-of-need service and providing parts, repairs and even new systems that could be more efficiently built in space.
