***Trigger warning:?violence, neglect, and human rights abuses in psychiatric settings*** DBSA has been horrified and heartbroken at the abhorrent and unethical practices of Acadia Healthcare, as?reported by The New York Times this weekend.? The NYT investigation found that Acadia, which operates psychiatric hospitals in 19 states, systematically and repeatedly abused patients, held them against their will, and denied them legitimate medical care, violating the law in order to maximize insurance payouts and increase profits. DBSA believes that these violations: - Stigmatize mental health conditions - Prevent recovery and cause further harm - Deter people from seeking help? DBSA is calling on mental health care providers, insurance companies, first responders, and our supporters to fight for better oversight, increased accessibility and affordability, and more options and resources for those living with mood disorders. Read the full statement to understand the impact of these violations on the community and the systemic changes we are advocating for. https://lnkd.in/ew5yJHxG

关于我们
The Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) provides hope, help, support, and education for people and families affected by mood disorders. More than 21 million people in the U.S. live with depression or bipolar, and these conditions account for 90% of the nation's suicides. In all, mood disorders cost employers an estimated $23 billion in lost work days and other related losses. DBSA’s peer-based, wellness-oriented approach brings resources and support to more than 4 million people every year. Through our website, social media, podcasts and videos, we provide helpful information and insights 24/7. More than 500 local support groups and 160 chapters enable us to reach people and families where they live -- and for those who don't have a DBSA chapter nearby, we offer virtual support groups that people can access from anywhere in the country. Many of our online support groups focus on the unique needs of select populations such as seniors, military veterans, or friends and family members who support a loved one with bipolar or depression. At DBSA, we know that recovery is possible. We support the right of all individuals to choose their own path to wellness. Accordingly, we do not recommend or endorse specific treatments for bipolar disorder or depression. Instead, we offer easy-to-understand information that can help people and families make informed decisions. The medical experts and researchers on DBSA's Scientific Advisory Board review our educational materials to ensure they are both clear and accurate. Visit dbsalliance.org to learn more about our mission, values, core beliefs, and view the full range of our support, education, and wellness programs.

For Mental Illness Awareness Week, we asked our Associate Board, "How do you advocate for your mental health in the workplace?" Associate Board Member Aidan said, "I advocate for mental health in the workplace by setting a good example of what a generally healthy lifestyle balance looks like. I let others know if I need to come in late to work to get a workout in or if I need to run home to grab lunch. It can be uncomfortable because I’m a younger member of my team, but I think it’s crucial to demonstrate taking care of all health, not just physical health. Having honest conversations and being direct to other coworkers about what I need and what energy I have for that given day can be really effective, too. So, in short, speak up! DBSA allows me to have a bank of resources and potential offering of support to anybody I come across who may be struggling. I feel like I can offer concrete material that will really help; it is not just lip service." Read more about Aidan. https://bit.ly/3zTdSqS
