From his early days as an oil and gas specialist to his leadership roles within the BIA Rocky Mountain Region, Darryl’s impact has been profound. As Director since 2019, he has been instrumental in placing over four million acres back into federal trust, safeguarding Tribal lands for future generations. ? Attention everyone! We have a job opening that doesn't...suck. Or does it? This is a fish biologist position, GS- 0482-9/11, working in Ludington, Michigan for the Sea Lamprey Control Program. The primary focus of the position is to control invasive sea lamprey populations using various methods. While the sea lamprey is native to the Atlantic Ocean, it is highly invasive to the Great Lakes. The invasive sea lampreys are a jawless, parasitic fish that entered the Great Lakes system via manmade locks and shipping canals. Their aggressive behavior and appetite for the bodily fluids of fish wreaked havoc on native fish populations and decimated an already vulnerable lake trout fishery. Yes, you heard correctly—Fat Bear Week, a time when we collectively celebrate the corpulent charms of our Ursidae friends, kicks off October 2-8. These chunky champs have been chowing down, packing on the pounds, and eyeing the title all summer long. (We assume they know they are competing.) Also, we’re currently seeking volunteers to weigh and crown the winning bear. Anyone? Bueller? Just kidding. Not making that mistake again. Time flies! Celebrating 10 years, #FatBearWeek is an annual competition that highlights the healthy appetites of brown bears as well as the nourishing ecosystem in which they thrive. By engaging in some hefty eating of the all-important salmon, the bear’s ample proportions serve as a testament to their survival instincts, preparing them for the long winter. It’s kinda a BIG deal.
