?? Exciting News: Richard Boyatzis' new book, The Science of Change: Discovering Sustained, Desired Change from Individuals to Organizations and Communities! Dr. Richard Boyatzis' latest book brings together his extensive #research on the nature of #sustained, #meaningful change across individuals, teams, organizations, and even entire communities, diving into over five decades of research on Intentional Change Theory (ICT). ICT is a multilevel framework that explores how individuals and groups can achieve long-lasting, intentional transformation through five phases: (1) Ideal Self (shared vision), (2) Real Self (norms), (3) developing a learning agenda, (4) engaging in experimentation/practice, and (5) building resonant relationships to enable the entire process. Key insights: ?? Positive and Negative Emotional Attractors (PEA and NEA) are the tipping points through the five phases, and they can either drive or hinder change processes, as processes with antagonistic components ?? Because of that, goal-setting and problem-solving suppress openness to new ideas and people ?? On the other hand, the ideal self and a shared vision are the drivers of change ?? Resonant relationships are characterized by shared vision, shared compassion, and shared energy This book is an invaluable resource for anyone interested in understanding how to create meaningful #change for themselves, their #teams, #organizations, or #communities. This framework is equally applicable to getting better at playing the #guitar, achieving a department #sales target, rallying a community to action over a #toxic spill, or mobilizing a country to #fight a #pandemic. ?? We’re excited to share that Tathagata Bhowmik has successfully qualified and is advancing to Candidacy for the PhD in Organizational Behavior. Tathagata’s qualifying paper is titled “Bauls are like Finger Food During Drinks”: The Intensifying Commodification and Occupational Precarity of the Indian Subaltern Baul Musicians. In this ethnographic study, Tathagata examines how the social relations between marginalized artists—such as the Baul musicians of India—and socially advantaged consumers affect artists' occupational precarity. His research builds on scholarship that shows how objective precarity can increase for marginalized communities, contributing to our understanding of labor issues and social dynamics in the arts. Thank you to his committee members, Diana Bilimoria, faculty advisor, as well as Ronald Fry, and Corinne Coen, for their support and guidance. Congratulations, Tathagata Bhowmik, PhD Candidate. We look forward to the next steps in your PhD journey! #Qualifying #OccupationalPrecarity #EthnographicResearch #MarginalizedCommunities #BaulMusicians #PhD #PhDStudent #PhDCandidate #WSOM #TheWeatherheadWay Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University

?? New Publication Alert! We are thrilled to announce the latest publication from Dr. John Paul Stephens and co-authors Lauren H., Jody Hoffer Gittell, Ninna Meier, and Joel Cutcher-Gershenfeld in The American Review of Public Administration: "Seeing the Whole Together Through Relational Mapping: A Method for Engaging in Complex Systems Change." As we face complex global challenges that span organizational and sectoral boundaries, a holistic perspective is essential for driving effective systems change. This paper introduces relational mapping, a method grounded in relational coordination theory, designed to help participants gain a "whole systems" view in complex environments. Relational mapping empowers stakeholders to: 1?? See the big picture in relation to individual parts, 2?? Share both explicit and tacit knowledge, 3?? Engage in dialogue across diverse perspectives using the map as a common boundary object, 4?? Minimize the impact of power imbalances, 5?? Co-design interventions with input from multiple viewpoints. This study highlights an illustrative case of relational mapping applied in a South Carolina community to address complex systems change, offering insights into the conditions necessary for success, and implications for public management. ?? ???New podcasts alert: Our very own Dr. Ellen B. Van Oosten, PhD, BCC was featured on The Future of Internal Communication podcast, and on the Harvard Business Review's On #Leadership podcast (new episode out on September 25)! In the insightful conversation in the Future of Internal Communication podcast about organizational culture and communication, hosted by Jennifer Sproul, Cathryn Barnard, and Dominic Walters, Dr. Van Oosten delves into human behavior to offer a fresh perspective on how #organizations can better support their internal stakeholders, especially as they navigate the constant #changes of the 2020s. ?? One of the key #takeaways? Dr. Van Oosten emphasizes that #leadership challenges often involve overlooking the *human* element. In focusing on #tasks and #responsibilities, organizations can forget that authentic #engagement and long-term behavioral change come from addressing people’s deeper needs, not just their #job and #roles. On the #HBR On Leadership podcast, Dr. Van Oosten offers advice on how to make the #transition to leadership and #management: 1?? when you’ve been tapped for a managerial role, but you don’t want the job, 2?? if your supervisor is blocking you from earning a promotion into management, and 3?? if you only have informal management experience. ??
