Researchers have recently developed an AI-powered model capable of determining, in just 10 seconds during surgery, whether any removable portion of a cancerous brain tumor remains, according to a study published in Nature. Says Dr. Brian Gill, "Identifying the margin between normal brain and tumor infiltrated brain can be challenging. Currently we use several intraoperative tools to help us achieve this goal including dynamic ultrasound imaging and fluorescence guided surgery. This AI driven approach is another cutting edge helpful tool that will help surgeons safely increase the extent of resection for patients with brain tumors." Congratulations to Dr. Sean Lavine, MD, FAANS who presented at TCT 2024 in Washington, DC. The TCT annual meeting serves as a resource for interventional cardiology and provides in-depth coverage across the spectrum of cardiovascular disease research and practice and produced by Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF) a non-profit that works to help doctors improve survival and quality of life for people suffering from heart and vascular disease. From the US Department of Veterans Affairs: SCIs are estimated to affect between 249,000 and 363,000 Americans, with about 17,730 new injuries occurring each year. About 80% of people with new injuries are males, and roughly 42,000 people with SCIs are Veterans. Nearly half of all SCIs occur in people between the ages of 16 and 30, so many patients live with the effects of these injuries for decades. Columbia Neurosurgery has produced award-winning work to develop spinal cord injury treatment and won several government grants including from Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to support these efforts. We’re proud to lead the way for new innovations that have the potential not only to support our veterans, but also our patients at large. Happy Veterans Day!

We’re excited to share new research co-authored by Dr. Dean Chou, MD, Chief of Spine Surgery at Columbia Neurosurgery and Och Spine. His study, published with the International Spine Study Group, compared outcomes of staged vs. same-day minimally invasive spinal deformity surgeries. Key findings reveal that, for carefully selected patients, both approaches can be equally effective. ?? For more details, visit https://lnkd.in/gh9F8ked
