The Materials Science and Engineering Department is jointly operated by the Texas A&M University College of Engineering and College of Science. The department offers a Master of Science, Master of Engineering and Doctor of Philosophy degrees and has more than 150 graduate students currently in the program who are working on a wide range of materials-related interdisciplinary research projects. This multidisciplinary department includes faculty members from several disciplines, including aerospace engineering, biology, biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, nuclear engineering and physics. Many of today's most pressing scientific problems stem from the limitations of materials currently available, and this department is at the forefront of new knowledge and discovery at Texas A&M University.

This last January, Jessica Zamarripa, a Ph.D student in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Texas A&M, was admitted to the NASA Pathways Internship Program at Johnson Space Center in Houston, TX as a graduate student trainee. She spent 5 months working with the power and battery safety team under the Power and Propulsion Division as well as contributed overall toward NASA missions supporting the International Space Station and human spaceflight. For her dedication and contributions, Jessica was awarded the 2024 Johnson Space Center CO-OPS Award and the 2024 On the Spot Award. "Working at NASA Johnson Space Center as a graduate student trainee under the NASA Pathways Program has been an incredible experience filled with challenges, knowledge sharing and team support. My mentors, supervisor and program coordinators made me feel welcomed and considered, valued my thoughts and opinions and provided support to foster growth in my desired profession." Dr. Vivek Subramanian, former postdoctoral researcher under Materials Science and Engineering Professor, Dr. Ned Thomas, was recently awarded the 2024 Birks Award for best contributed paper presented at Microscopy and Microanalysis 2023. His award-winning paper was entitled, “Cryo-FIB and Synchrotron SAXS/WAXS Studies of Confined Crystallization of PDMS in Tubular Network Block Copolymer Morphologies”.
