'USAID investments significantly reduced deaths among children under age five and women of reproductive age, studies show' "...Bill Weiss and his colleagues used a method called a 'synthetic control' analysis to estimate childhood mortality retrospectively across a group of countries that did and didn’t receive significant amounts of USAID funding. "The researchers compared a 'treatment' group of countries that received a high level of USAID funding for maternal and child health and malaria during the study period of 2000 to 2016 with a 'synthetic control' group of similar countries that did not receive this level of funding. "The study found that countries that received above-average levels of USAID funding had, on average, 29 fewer deaths per 1,000 live births than the synthetic control group of countries that didn’t receive funding. That works out to roughly 500 fewer deaths per day, Weiss says." https://lnkd.in/eKqPtWGc

"The measles component of the measles, mumps, and rubella shot that nearly all American kids receive today is 'one of the best vaccines we have,' William Moss, a measles expert at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, told me. Two doses in early childhood are enough to cut someone’s risk of getting measles by 97 percent. And vaccination is the only surefire way to slow the spread of the wildly contagious disease."

Just last week, on March 3, 2025, we at the JB Grant Global Health Society hosted the Navigating International Health Seminar in collaboration with Department of International Health, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health held at Feinstone Hall. This timely event provided a platform for meaningful discussions, one that we, along with the broader BSPH community, will not soon forget. The seminar brought together students, faculty, and global health professionals for insightful conversations on the rapidly evolving landscape of international health. Our esteemed Dean of the Bloomberg School of Public Health, Dr. Ellen MacKenzie delivered the opening remarks, emphasizing the urgent need for proactive strategies to tackle today’s complex global health challenges. We were also honored to have Dr. Marie Diener-West Chair of the MPH Program, whose presence reinforced the school’s dedication to cultivating global health leaders and advancing mentorship in the field. Our distinguished speakers and panelists, Dr. Judd Walson and Dr. Chizoba Wonodi led insightful discussions on key initiatives aimed at strengthening partnerships and enhancing capacity building. Dr. Judd emphasized the importance of advancing international health education through a Fellowship Program for low- and middle-income countries, sparking meaningful dialogue on addressing the diverse needs of global communities. Dr. Chizoba Wonodi further underscored the pivotal role of both personal and institutional innovation in the evolving global health landscape. The conversations delved into strategies for building personal brands, exploring new funding opportunities, and advocating for the restoration of global health funding.
