The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) is responsible for administering undergraduate degrees in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Robotics Engineering, as well as a dual-degree program in Electrical and Computer Engineering. The ECE Department also oversees four M.S.E graduate degree programs, as well a PhD program in Electrical, Electronics, and Computer Engineering and a D.Eng degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering. Our undergraduate programs have more than 550 students presently enrolled. Each year, approximately 60 - 70 students graduate with a Bachelor's degree from an ECE program and approximately 50 students graduate with a master's degree from one of our programs. We are proud of our high retention rate which exceeds 60%. While most of the graduates go on to work in industry often in a design and development environment, a few pursue full-time graduate studies at regional and national universities.

This past summer, I had the great opportunity of working with Derek Servin (Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Michigan-Dearborn), my wonderful undergraduate student, on design of autonomous blimps. Last weekend (Sep 7 and 8, 2024), Derek Servin, Executive Board Member of the Intelligent Systems Club (ISC) at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, attended the 4th annual Goonettes Intentional (Girls Off-Season Event) at Woodhaven High School, Flat Rock, MI. Following are Derek's comments on the event. "I'm pleased to report that it was highly successful in several ways. We saw great engagement from the all-girls robotics teams, with about 70% stopping by our booth. ... Raising awareness about UMD’s robotics degree was a major highlight, as many attendees were amazed and excited to learn about the program. High school seniors and their parents, in particular, benefited from the brochures and information we provided, which helped them consider UMD as a strong option for their future education. Word quickly spread among participants, and some even told their friends to check out our booth, amplifying our outreach efforts." Tech companies, policymakers and regulators in the U.S. must do more to combat political deepfakes as the 2024 U.S. presidential election approaches, Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering Hafiz Malik argued in a recent op-ed in The Hill. “Piecemeal end-user approaches to rooting out deepfakes may play well for public relations purposes or to ease tech executives’ consciences,” Malik wrote. “But a more thoughtful, all-fronts approach will be needed to save our democracy.” Read Dr. Malik's full opinion piece at https://lnkd.in/dJviCWAk.
