M-EWD Leadership at DISC Summit: Driving the Future of the Defense Industrial Workforce ???? On Oct. 30, 2024, the Manufacturing Education and Workforce Development (M-EWD) team had the honor of participating in the Defense Industrial Supply Chain (DISC) Summit. Dr. Charlene Stokes, program manager for M-EWD, led discussions on two pivotal panels focused on strengthening and enhancing the Department of Defense (DoD) workforce in the aerospace and industrial sectors. During the summit, Dr. Stokes engaged an audience of government representatives, industry leaders, and community college partners by sharing insights on “Strengthening the DoD Aerospace Workforce” and “Enhancing the DoD Industrial Workforce.” ?? Key Highlights: Collaboration with North Carolina: Engaging discussions with industry, government, and academia explored pathways for local talent in advanced manufacturing careers. Strategic focus: Addressing critical skills gaps and preparing the next-generation workforce to meet evolving DoD needs, particularly in advanced manufacturing and AI. ?? What’s next? The late morning presentations at the #TRXevent were made by #AMmembers from JuggerBot 3D LLC, Center Street Technologies, and the The University of Texas at Austin. Zachary DiVencenzo, JuggerBot 3D, reviewed their project on large-scale additive manufacturing with advanced thermoset and thermoplastic materials. Alexander Fitzgerald, Center Street Technologies, followed up with a report out on progress on Phase 2 of their project on advanced manufacturing confluence development. Desiderio Kovar, The University of Texas at Austin, closed out the morning, exploring binderless additive manufacturing of ceramics by selective laser flash sintering. On Monday, November 11, 2024, we observe Veterans Day. Initially known as Armistice Day, this day is dedicated to honoring the bravery of those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. November 11, 1918, at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, a temporary cessation of hostilities was established between the Allied forces and Germany during World War I, which was then referred to as “the Great War.” Since that day we have continued to pay tribute to all American service members, both past and present, every November 11th. I invite you to join me in recognizing the courageous individuals who serve alongside us here in OUSD (R&E). It is a privilege to collaborate with each of you, as you embody a vital link in the chain of honor that safeguards the freedoms we cherish daily. I would also like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to all current and former veterans within R&E for their unwavering commitment to supporting and defending our great Nation.
