Congratulations to everyone who competed at the ICPC - International Collegiate Programming Contest North Central North America Regional Programming Contest last Saturday. This year, our site welcomed 16 teams from Drake University, Graceland University, Iowa State University, Simpson College, and The University of Kansas. Teams from Iowa State University each placed in the top three teams at the local site, with one team securing third place overall in the NCNA region. They will go on to compete at the North American Championship in the spring. A special thank you to Collins Aerospace who helped us sponsor the event.

关于我们
The Computer Science department resides in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the largest college at Iowa State University. Currently, the department has 40 full-time faculty members. We have strong research and educational programs in: AI, ML, and Date Science, Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Human-Computer Interaction, Robotics and Autonomous Systems, Software Engineering and Programming Languages, Systems and Networking, and Theoretical Foundations. Our department has over $16 million in active research grants. However, factoring in our interdisciplinary activities in biosciences, mathematical science, and engineering, our department’s impact is larger. Overall, we contribute to approximately $25 million in active research and training grants. Our educational offerings are extensive, providing B.S., B.A., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science, and an M.S. in AI. Additionally, we've launched innovative programs like the B.S. in Software Engineering, B.S. in Data Science, Data Science Minor, and Certificate, as well as B.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. We also maintain active engagement in interdepartmental graduate programs such as Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, Human-Computer Interactions, and Cybersecurity, affirming our comprehensive approach to education. MISSION: Our mission is to excel and to be leaders for creating, sharing, and applying computing knowledge in the state of Iowa, and to be nationally and internationally recognized as having student-centric, innovative computer science education, research, service, and outreach. We aim to be the leaders in building computational and dependable intelligent approaches that address emergent needs of society at large.

Check out the article below on transformer-based performance translation in CodeRosetta to dive into the innovative work being done by Associate Professor Ali Jannesari and PhD students Ali Tehrani and Arjit Bhattacharjee, alongside researchers from Google DeepMinds and Cisco Outshift. #Research #Innovation
"In twenty-seventeen, the work was lean, code by code, machine by machine. But now it’s twenty-twenty-four, where AI leads performance lore." In 2017, researchers from Google introduced the transformer architecture in their paper titled "Attention is All You Need" by Vaswani et al. This groundbreaking work demonstrated that transformers could outperform previous architectures in sequence-to-sequence tasks, including machine translation. At that time, 'performance translation'—the art of transforming a program into a different representation to improve its runtime performance—relied mostly on traditional compiler techniques, such as static analyses guided by cost models. Today, Ali Tehrani, Arjit Bhattacharjee, Le Chen, Nesreen K. Ahmed, Amir Yazdanbakhsh, and Ali Jannesari show that similar techniques can now be applied to translate a sequential program into a parallel version, potentially written in a different programming language. Check out some of the research being done by our students, as well as students from other departments in Iowa State University - College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Iowa State University - College of Engineering, and Iowa State University - College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Students from programs such as the ISU Department of Statistics, the Iowa State University Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, the Department of Mathematics, and the Department of Computer Science are all creating amazing research in Iowa State University's Dependable Data-Driven Discovery traineeship.
We are proud of our fellows:?Allison Triebe,?Yonas Sium?,?Spencer Wadsworth,? Laura Zinnel,?Austin Sympson,?Geng Ding,?Sigournie Brock,?Cyna Nguyen,?and Xiang Ma,?showcasing their ability to communicate to diverse audiences at the 1st Annual Dependable Data Driven Discovery Research Symposium?Iowa State University. This group represents grads from Biological and Chemical Engineering, Biology, Math, Statistics, and Computer Science, demonstrating the application of Responsible AI to their research by identifying and mitigating risks to dependable data-driven discovery learned in the NSF-funded National Research Traineeship. https://lnkd.in/eADKBtst
