If #gamification is good, is more gamification better? More and more organizations are implementing #virtual workplace training and adding gamification elements to them. But gamification comes in varying levels of intensity. A high-intensity gamification would be virtually indistinguishable from a commercial video game made for #VR. The environment would be richly detailed, the learner would play as the lead character and interact with friends and enemies, earning points, badges, levels, power-ups, or special skills or tools along the way. A low-intensity gamification, on the other hand, might borrow just a few game mechanics. For example, the learner is able to navigate freely around the environment and interact with onscreen objects to learn more about them. A total of 355 employed individuals from several different countries were randomly assigned to complete a low or high-intensity gamified VR learning experience. In a recent paper, John Fiset and Alyson Byrne introduced the concept of Safety-Specific Abusive Supervision. SSAS is "the extent to which a supervisor's active response to safety incidents is perceived by employees as abusive." It immediately made me think of this scene from the movie "October Sky." I think it's a brilliant example of the concept. It's a great flick, too!
