Affordable housing continues to be one of Denver’s greatest challenges. Recently, the Denver City Council approved citywide zoning for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), an important step in addressing Denver’s housing crisis. The Denver Housing Authority (DHA), through the West Denver Renaissance Collaborative (WDRC), has developed the ADU Pilot Program to help Denver residents navigate the ADU process and build a second home on their property. This program offers several benefits, including: ? First-time buyers to co-own the ADU homes ? Generational wealth-building ? Housing stability and affordability (created by offering below market project costs) In partnership with the City and County of Denver and Habitat for Humanity of Metro Denver, DHA has helped participants save up to $86,000 in construction costs, making ADU development more attainable and the resulting rents affordable. Renee Martinez Stone, DHA’s Chief Strategy and Planning Officer, shared: "The City of Denver's decision to expand ADU zoning shows appraisers, insurers, lenders, and builders that ADUs are an important part of the toolbox in solving Denver's housing crisis. Arts Street’s biggest project of summer '24 kicked off with an inspiring meeting with DHA’s Executive team about a mural for their main building. Twenty-one talented young artists, ages 15-18, crafted vibrant digital designs reflecting DHA’s vision. After presenting their creations, the team selected an exciting mural design by Eli G. and three honorable mentions that will be transformed into stunning hanging art.
