It’s with a mixture of sadness and pride that we honor Brian Erichsen as he steps away as Head Coach of Denver Barbarians Rugby Club after eight years of dutiful service. The Erichsen Era is one of the proudest and most fruitful periods in the club’s rich history, with Brian leading us to three USA Rugby National Championship Finals, winning the D2 title in 2018 and 2023. Brian brought a hard edge to the Club, embedding hard work, commitment, grit, and teamwork into our DNA, characteristics he had epitomised throughout a stellar playing career that started in his hometown of Winnipeg, Manitoba, a town that breeds hard men. He moved to rugby-rich Vancouver in 2003, where he captained Meraloma Rugby Club for 11 seasons, leading the side to five British Columbia Premier League Finals. The lock’s graft earned him selection to Rugby Canada, culminating in his inclusion in the squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup in New Zealand. A celebrated member of Rugby Manitoba Hall of Fame—alongside his father, Wilf—everyone at the Barbos is proud of Brian’s reputation and success as a feared competitor and enforcer on the pitch, and a gentle giant off it! Away from rugby, Brian was an accomplished junior hockey player, playing in his hometown of Winnipeg for the Charleswood Hawks—the most successful team in the history of the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League—before turning his attention more seriously to rugby.
