Increasing health equity with Denver neighborhoods
关于我们
Denver Food Rescue is a 501(c)3 non-profit in Denver, Colorado. Our mission is to produce health equity with Denver neighborhoods. We utilize fresh edible whole fruits & veggies that would would otherwise be thrown away from retailers & directly distribute them to neighborhoods in the Denver Metro area with barriers to healthy food access. All of our No Cost Grocery Programs are co-created and led by residents of the communities! Programs are located at schools, community centers, and after school programs. Health equity: At DFR we believe that health is a right that should be enjoyed by everyone. The current system creates health gaps between people, particularly impacting low-income people and people of color. There is no blanket solution to improve the health of our communities. Instead, we need to be intentional about creating access to the services and education each person needs to make informed health decisions. We believe in a world in which a person’s health is not determined by their race, income, or geography. Food security: Each individual deserves to have control of their own food situation. This means to have enough food for themselves and their families, and to not stress about running out. Whether this self determination is made possible through increased wages or increased access, our communities deserve to have the amount and type of food that best serves them. Integration of feedback: DFR believes in constant learning and improvement. We recognize that we alone do not have the answers. Lasting solutions will only be formed through consistent and authentic engagement with people who are experiencing the issues we exist to address. DFR is deferential to the perspectives of these individuals and holds them to the highest regard. We are also informed by evidence-based, scientific research and internal evaluation practices. Where all three of these perspectives overlap (community, scientific, and internal) lies the framework for our actions.

Direct distribution, maximum freshness ?? Our volunteers move produce directly from donors to our No Cost Grocery Program, bypassing warehouses to ensure our community receives the most nutritious fruits and vegetables possible. In Denver, access to nutritious produce is not always equal. By eliminating storage and connecting donors directly with those in need, we're working to remove barriers and provide essential nourishment at no cost. We're committed to building a more food-secure Denver. Join us in our mission to rescue food and nourish our community, making nutritious food accessible for all. #DenverFoodRescue #FoodRescue #FoodSecurity #CommunitySupport #NoCostGroceries #FreshProduce #DirectDistribution #Denver #LocalImpact #FoodJustice

We're proud of everyone who attended the Keep Kids Fed Lobby Day at the State Capital, including our incredible staff members Isabel Weber Alatorre and Dee! Their dedication to food justice was on full display as they advocated for policies like Healthy School Meals For All and HB25-1166. These bills are crucial for building a more equitable food system, and we're grateful for everyone who helped us make our voices heard ????
So glad I had the opportunity to return to the Colorado State Capitol this week! As many of you know I was a legislative intern last session, so I was excited to continue my policy advocacy in my position at Denver Food Rescue. On Wednesday I joined Hunger Free Colorado and Save the Children for Keep Kids Fed Lobby Day. We spoke to legislators like Rep. Ball about supporting Healthy School Meals For All and how we can expand the program to include things like nutrition training. Today I joined our partners Boulder Food Rescue and We Don’t Waste at the House Business and Labor Committee. We are supporting HB25-1166 Efforts to Reduce Food Waste presented by Rep Feret. It unanimously passed onto the Committee of the Whole! It was also great to see friends I interned with who are now doing amazing things in and around the Capitol! I even met some of this years CSU interns and talked to them and Dr. Duffy about the work I get to do now.

Nutrition insecurity isn’t just about access; it’s about justice. This #BlackHistoryMonth, we honor the Black leaders who recognized the deep connection between systemic racism and food access, and who courageously developed community-led solutions to address it head-on. Inspired by the work and stories highlighted in Amanda Ruffner’s article featured by Share Food Program, these powerful examples, and so many others, continue to inspire us at Denver Food Rescue as we strive to build a more equitable food system, one rooted in community. ??
