Some states are changing their mandatory reporting laws, requiring prosecutors to be notified from the start of adolescent sexual assault cases. The goal? To improve justice outcomes. But does it work? A new study found that while this policy increased referrals, it did not lead to higher conviction rates. Instead, successful prosecutions were more likely when victims reported the assault to police themselves—before or at the time of a forensic exam. ?? The key takeaway? Strengthening multidisciplinary teamwork—not just expanding reporting laws—may be a more effective way to support survivors and improve case outcomes.
