It is close to my heart too ?? It was made possible because many people did the right thing and did it well. The International Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research BEHSR group held a virtual summit during the COVID time in 2020. Daniel W. McNeil and Cameron L. Randall invited Kate Guastaferro to talk about MOST and it clicked with us. Linda M. Collins, Ph.D., one of the developers of the technique wrote in details about MOST in two books that are there for people to read and learn from. She hosted Merna Ihab in NYU for three months where she learned more about MOST. Lessons? Virtual events works, bringing people from different disciplines together is good, and even short training periods make a difference. Thanks to all of them for this. Merna Ihab also did the right thing and did it well. She used the technique for the first time in dentistry in her master's degree project. It was a huge challenge and she handled it exceedingly well. We published the study protocol (https://lnkd.in/dA26CFhW) and the results of the preparation phase (https://lnkd.in/d4MujAZp) and now, the factorial trial, at last! MOST is a powerful technique. It breaks down the complexities of a multi-component intervention. It allowed us to look into the bits and pieces and learn that: 1- The videos that we broke our backs producing were not the magic solution to motivate mothers to brush their children's teeth. 2- More is not better when it comes to digital interventions to change behaviours. 3- We need to find a way to scale up brief motivational interviewing (MI) for groups and do this with high fidelity because it seems to work. 4- The effect size when videos, messages and MI are combined is still modest. We have to revisit the components and improve them before recommending these m-oral health components. 5- With all the work that went into creating the components and testing them, two commercial determinants of ECC in Egypt remained untouched. Sugar was too much available and toothpaste was very much unavailable. Our intervention could not affect these. Congratulations, Merna Ihab! You did an excellent job.
