Last week, I had the privilege of participating in a feedback session at Dent Education with young people in Baltimore City. I first connected with Dent Education during my Mandela Washington Fellowship at University of Maryland Baltimore County, and their work continues to inspire me. They don’t just talk about empowering youth, they actively equip them with the tools, confidence, and resources to create the change they want to see. During the session, I had the opportunity to listen to young people’s ideas and provide feedback on refining their mission, vision, and objectives. We explored how to effectively pitch ideas and communicate in ways that truly connect with others. One key takeaway was the importance of always remembering the WHY behind our work, but just as crucially, learning the HOW. There is already great work happening in Malawi and across Africa in youth development. But there is still gaps in access to resources, especially financial resources, that limits young people from fully realizing their potential. As we work toward youth development, lets be dedicated to ensuring that African youth are/we also positioned to innovate, lead, implement, and develop ideas that reflect who we/they are and address the challenges we/they experience in our communities. Creating spaces where young people can think deeper, beyond the ordinary, and have the tools to bring their visions to life. After years attending, I am so excited to facilitate 2 sessions at SXSW EDU with my Dent Education teammates Taylor C. and Ayomide S.! We're leading a workshop on "Youth Innovation Careers: Prototyping New Program Models" on Monday where participants will brainstorm and design Earn-to-Learn prototypes to better support youth careers in their own work. ?? On Tuesday, we're hosting a "Local Youth Innovation Coalition Building Meet Up" to spark partnerships and shift thinking from "competitor" to "collaborator" inspired by our work with the Baltimore Youth Innovation Coalition. ??
