关于我们

The Dennison Railroad Depot Museum, designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011, is the best example of a building still reflecting its WWII Canteen Heritage. Built in 1873, the Depot was once the site of some of the most extensive railroad shops & yards in the country with 3,000 employees and 22 passenger trains a day. It was located on the National Defense Railway Route and was the site for a WWI Red Cross Canteen and a WWII Salvation Army Canteen that served 1.5 million soldiers, earning the town the nickname "Dreamsville USA,". Today, the Depot houses a Museum, the Trax Diner and The Whistle Stop Railway Shop. Open year round except Mondays and holidays, the Depot has a full calendar of events including Polar Express Train Rides in December. Exhibits are in the original Mens and Womens Waiting Rooms, Baggage Room and Railway Express Building. In 2008, a new wing was added to the Museum composed of Railroad cars. The wing includes the Childrens Interactive Railroad Exhibit, a rare WWII Hospital Car (recevied Save America Treasures) that houses the canteen artifacts, a fancy parlour car that displays changing feature exhbiits, an Art Deco Local History Car and a Postal Car that houses the Museum Archival Research Library. The Museum also operates two additional museums, Historic Schoenbrunn Village owned by the Ohio Historical Society and the Uhrichsville Clay Museum

A great day at the Ohio Travel Association Conference. We were recognized with the prestigious Spirit of Commuity Award for Polar Express. Many thanks to our community of volunteers and staff who make Polar happen. This award is for YOU!! And to our many outstanding partners, most especially the Ohio Central Railroad. Competition for the award was fierce, so congratulations. Congrats to Taylur Cunningham, our Marketing and Brand Manager, for winning her first Citation of Excellence for her Polar Express Marketing Campaign. We were lucky to have Board Member Adria Bergeron join us and Ethan Zucal, the Depot’s Safety Manager on the Polar Express. Only 63 days til Polar folks! • Today, we celebrate Rachel Rothacher, one of the 2024 Leading Ladies of Tuscarawas County. Rachel Rothacher shares her leadership role as follows: I appreciate being included in this year’s class of leading ladies alongside all these impressive women! I have been in public service my entire career whether through my current position as Administrative Director for the Stark-Tuscarawas-Wayne Recycling District or in positions at Kent State University Tuscarawas, the Tuscarawas County Public Library, the Village of Sugarcreek, and more. In all of these roles, I have tried to foster positive relationships and help bring efficiency for the purpose of better serving the public and being a good steward of public funds. This has often included getting new initiatives off the ground and guiding fellow staff members, and this is where I have tried to embrace the role of “leader,” working with coworkers where they are, providing training when needed, and having patience and understanding. When serving as a leader, I think back to the leaders in my life and what makes them stand out. It seems like a common theme is that they all treated all tasks and team members as equally important—they never acted as though they were too good to do any task and they were never condescending. Congratulations Rachel! Chosen as a Leading Lady by The Women's Success Series Steering Committee, the Lucille Nussdorfer Tuscarawas County of the Year Award Committee from the Dennison Railroad Depot Museum and the Tuscarawas County Leading Ladies of 2023. • Today, we celebrate Michaela Thomas, one of the 2024 Leading Ladies of Tuscarawas County. Michaela Thomas shares her leadership role as follows: I am deeply rooted in Tuscarawas County and fell in love with the community early on. Beginning my journey at WTUZ Radio at 19, I quickly developed a respect for honest and ethical journalism and continued in the industry for several years. The birth of my first daughter, Remi, in 2016 inspired me to launch Newsymom just a few months later. This initiative, born from my own experiences as a mother, aims to offer support and resources to families. My career later led her to proudly accept a position with the Stark County Sheriff’s Office in 2017 where I continue to serve today as the Director of Community Engagement. My continued efforts in various roles, including serving as a consultant with the Small Business Development Center and marketing resource for a variety of local organizations, highlight a leadership style that's both nurturing and inclusive, focusing on creating a supportive network for all. This year I expanded my vision further with the launch of Flourish-By Newsymom at New Towne Mall. which prioritizes quality childcare and workforce development. Flourish rises to meet the complex needs of today’s families and reflects my philosophy that leading involves innovating and prioritizing families in our community. My approach to leadership is grounded in the conviction that the most impactful leaders are those who elevate and inspire others to reach their highest potential. I currently live in Ashland County with my husband, Aaron, and two daughters Remi, and Kimi. But, my footprint here in Tuscarawas County stands strong. I often joke that “Tuscarawas County will never get rid of me.” Congratulations Michaela! • Today, we celebrate Gina Space, one of the 2024 Leading Ladies of Tuscarawas County. Gina shares her leadership role as follows: I’m very honored to chosen as a Leading Lady in Tuscarawas County and to be included in this amazing group of women. What I’d like to highlight in my story is it’s okay if your timeline for a career looks different than most others. I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do when I finished undergrad. I interned, worked in city government, then about five years later at the age of 28, I started law school at night while working full time. Eventually I transferred law schools to be back in Dover, where I got married, gaining a delightful stepdaughter—Stella—in the process. I ran a City Council campaign in November of 2021. A month later, I graduated from law school while pregnant with my son Jack, and sat for the bar (my first of two attempts) two weeks before he was born. Shortly after being sworn in as an attorney, I ran another campaign—for Dover’s Law Director. And now, my husband and I are expecting another son. I would not have ever imagined these events taking place in this order. At times it was frustrating and challenging. Goals have felt unattainable. But there are advantages in experiencing a long runway to beginning one’s career. Gaining exposure to the law and life prior to law school gave me a reference point that I wouldn’t otherwise have. Being a mother when I entered the practice of law provided me with a more well-rounded perspective. Let’s face it, age brings maturity, and that maturity has been important for me, both in the practice of law and in my approach to politics. I have been blessed with a family that has been there for me at every step of this path. Especially my husband and my parents—but also my coworkers, friends, and my extended family. I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given; and I know that there are many smart, talented women that didn’t get the breaks I got. For women who feel as though it’s too late to start, my message to you is, it is okay to not know what you want to do for a career when you’re 21, 25, 30, and much older. Goals can and should be fluid. What may be impossible today, could be possible tomorrow. And finally, be sure to give the support you needed to someone else. Congratulations Gina! • Today, we celebrate Pat Warther, one of the 2024 Leading Ladies of Tuscarawas County. Pat shares her leadership role as follows: Thank you for including me in this list of leading ladies in Tuscarawas County, it is truly an honor! Growing up as the oldest daughter with 5 other siblings, forced me to learn leadership and independence skills. Watching my parents give of themselves volunteering at the church, school and other civic organizations taught me the importance of giving of your time and talents to help improve your community. Speaking up and saying yes, I’ll help, became expected. My profession as a registered nurse allowed me to continue to help others. Most of my professional career was spent in Long Term Care Facilities as an educator, Director of Nursing, Administrator and Vice President of Operations. Leading other team members while dealing with some individuals’ worst moments taught me compassion, which I believe is essential in a leader. I currently work as the Executive Director for the Tuscarawas Clinic for the Working Uninsured. I enjoy assisting others in improving their health and securing funding to continue to grow the program. I am involved on the Board for Cleveland Clinic Union Hospital as well as Access Tusc. Being involved in your community and saying “yes, how can I help” is something I try to encourage my children and other young people to do. Congratulations Pat! • Today, we celebrate Amy Smith, one of the 2024 Leading Ladies of Tuscarawas County. Amy Smith shares her leadership role as follows: First, I’d like to thank the committee for this honor. It’s humbling to see my own name alongside the names of so many gifted and inspiring women. Since 1996 I’ve worked for WJER Radio where I’m now the General Manager. Here I have learned about leadership from many others, including fellow Leading Lady, Jennifer Varcolla. I believe that every good leader needs a great leader on her team, and I could not effectively do my job (or life!) without Mandy Garver, another 2024 Leading Lady and WJER Sales Manager. My work with WJER has blessed me with the best of friends and mentors. I’m proud to represent the Tuscarawas County Senior Center and the Tuscarawas County YMCA on their boards of directors. I’m inspired by their leaders, Jamie Smith and Meagan Shaeen, who have selflessly mentored me. I’m also a long-time volunteer for the Miss Clayland Scholarship Pageant, and I serve as the President of the North Lehman Neighborhood Alliance. I was drafted into those organizations by Martha Campbell and Lynda Tuttle, two other empowered women who have dedicated their lives to enriching their communities. I grew up in a family and a church filled with female mentors. I was taught that there were no limits, and I ran for my dreams because of the women who came before me. My grandmas, aunts, mom, and so many others gave me the freedom to be anyone I wanted to be, and what a beautiful life I have lived as a result. I have the good fortune to be from Tuscarawas County, a community filled with great people doing amazing things, giving back in generous ways every day. To me, leadership is a combination of adaptability, initiative, integrity, and empathy. It is surrounding yourself with people whose strengths are your own weaknesses, so that together you can accomplish greatness. At WJER I am inspired by the most talented, smart, dedicated team of radio-makers. I’m so proud of what they do and of what this station has meant to the community for 74 years. All credit to Agnes Reeves Greer, the OG Leading Lady who planted a radio station in Dover back in 1950. She carved a path that has entertained generations of listeners, and it has given me the best life imaginable. Congratulations Amy!
