We are proud to partner with Press Forward, a national movement to strengthen our democracy by revitalizing local news and information. They represent a national coalition investing more than $500 million to strengthen local newsrooms, close longstanding gaps in journalism coverage, advance public policy that expands access to local news, and to scale the infrastructure the sector needs to thrive. They were recently named to Fast Company’s 2025 list of Most Innovative Companies, not-for-profit category, and we congratulate everyone who is a part of this work!

关于我们
Democracy Fund is a foundation working to build an inclusive, multiracial democracy that is open, just, resilient, and trustworthy. Created by eBay founder and philanthropist Pierre Omidyar, Democracy Fund and its partner organization Democracy Fund Voice have together committed almost $425 million in grants since 2014 to support those working to strengthen our democracy. Democracy Fund collaborates with grantees, donors, and other partners to change America’s flawed system by strengthening and expanding the pro-democracy movement, defending against anti-democratic attacks, and advancing structural change. As we welcome new leadership, we want to wish our former Managing Director of Elections & Institutions?Lara Flint?all the best. We look forward to seeing what comes next!
It's time to share the news. After nearly 8 amazing years, I made the difficult decision to leave Democracy Fund and start looking for my next challenge. Democracy Fund (along with its sister organization, Democracy Fund Voice) is full of smart, fun, thoughtful, committed people -- and it has never been so needed. I learned and grew so much through these many years and the different roles that I played, from starting our first government accountability portfolio in 2017, to directing the Governance Program as it initiated new strategies, to co-leading our overall programmatic work as Managing Director of Elections & Institutions. I am lucky to have had the chance to collaborate with and learn from so many people across the democracy field during that time, and I am so grateful for all the field is doing as our country faces unprecedented challenges. I am incredibly proud of the way that Democracy Fund and its fearless leader Joe Goldman have been standing up in this moment for democracy, for the rule of law, and for the dignity and rights of every human being in this country. And I am inspired by the long-term work to make progress toward the inclusive, multi-racial democracy that our country deserves. It was hard to leave right now, as I'm sure you can all imagine. But this transition has been in the works since last summer, and I am truly delighted to congratulate Democracy Fund's new programmatic leadership: Sanjiv Rao, taking on the new role of Vice President, and Josh Stearns, the new Managing Director of Programs. Sanjiv and Josh are both insightful, thoughtful leaders who bring extensive expertise and experience to these roles. I have learned so much from both of them, and I am thrilled to see them carry this work forward. As for me, I am taking some time to recharge, reflect on where I can best contribute in the fight for our democracy, and prepare for my next challenge. There is so much to do.

Rana Elmir, Director of RISE Together Fund, a Democracy Fund grantee, shares what philanthropy must do to support immigrant communities targeted by recent or pending legislation: 1. Ensure these movements are meaningfully funded and at the table.? 2. At a minimum, do no harm. This means standing by existing grantees and advocating for increased funding across the sector.? 3. Support infrastructure for long-term sustainability. https://lnkd.in/eeP4ThMG

?? We’re proud to celebrate our partnership with Press Forward, which was just named to Fast Company’s 2025 list of Most Innovative Companies, not-for-profit category! ?? Local news is a vital resource that: ?? connects neighbors, ?? informs communities, ?? and shines a light on important issues and solutions. We’re glad to see this important work recognized. Local news is directly linked to active civic engagement, and an inclusive, multiracial democracy depends on the public being well-informed and ready to engage with their communities.

?? Welcome to our new followers!?If you're?just?getting to know Press Forward, our mission is simple: to bring as many resources as possible to local news. Every day, our team wakes up thinking: How do we make the case to funders who have never considered investing in local news? How do we get into rooms that local newsrooms can't?to?show how news and information impact communities? We launched Press Forward in 2023 with 22 funders, early believers who took a leap with us to strengthen communities by reimagining local news and information. Since then, we've?quadrupled?the number of funders to?88, invested over $200 million in the field, and launched 36 local chapters in communities across the state. We are stronger together.?A coalition like this can make a far?greater?impact than any one funder alone. ??
